Kara suggested starting a mesemb thread so here we are:

Confession time - how many mesembs have you killed?

What are your success stories?

Posting Fenestraria aurantica here because this is my personal record for fastest-killed plant - 3days! So what did I learn about babytoes from that:

  1. It's quite common for that to happen, they dislike moving intensely
  2. Never water them much in summer
  3. Don't water them for at least a week after you bring them home, no matter how dry they are

I got these in mid April so I am doing something right this time. Mainly because I got them directly from the grower, who told me what his plants need. He said I could water lightly as much as once a week in winter but about once a month in summer. It's the coldest part of the year right now and they are rewarding me with a new set of leaves on both sides. Of course I am terrified of ever repotting these, I think I'll go back to the grower next JSS show and ask him how best to do this. They are actually quite thirsty, I only water lightly but I have seen the little tops start wrinkling and collapsing if I don't water at least once a week
