Has anyone grown Dactylopsis digitata from seed, or at all?
Comments (4)Oh mesembs can be so beautiful, but some can be such a pain;). The little bit I gather is these can be difficult, but who doesn't love a good challenge. Makes the successes even that more special;). Steven Hammer says "Seeds should be sown in summer. It is best to use large pots and mabel-mixwith extra pumice. Sow seeds thinly. Two-year-old plants of both species can flower." Mabel mix from what I gathered is 2-1-1 Loam, coarse sand, and pumice. I read something about adding salt to the mix. I don't think this goes for seedlings, but an older plant. From a couple people and the famous Mr.Mesemb himself this is a step to skip. Goodluck:)....See MoreLet’s Talk Chicken
Comments (17)That has been happening across the board in groceries since the 60's. Bred for size and weight and as quickly as possible. Produce like tomatoes, strawberries, apples. Many shop by price having large families and on a tight budget. I can add pastured chickens to my local farm share that average 3-3.5 pounds. In rotation i have been stocking CooksVenture, usually 3 pounds pastured, and have a Mary's in the freezer. It is just under 4 pounds. Pre covid we would stop at a local farm but he freaked during lock-down. Locked his gate and took down his sign. He has city restaurant accounts so locals were just some bread and butter. Roasted chicken dinners became popular for take-out and delivery so i'm sure he did fine. A few weeks into lock down we ordered 40 pounds of chicken cages for 25$ loaded with meat. A box of meaty beef bones and i think 10 pounds of boneless skinless chicken thighs. Lots of veg. All from a high end restaurant supply. I had to dust off the big lobster/clam pot and simmer outside on a portable burner. Took all day but we had the time, 🙄. Doubt i will ever do that again but it was one of the best master stocks i've ever made. I roasted the chicken cages and bones in batches in the oven and braised the chicken thighs on the stovetop. --Chilled then added chopped later to my soups for the freezer. Fortunately i had a thin freezer at the time. Most of the stocks were pure frozen in pints and 1/2 pints. None of our local farm shares have raised prices at all. They went from 5,000 subscribers to 20,000 in 2020. The farmers are happy. Supporting local keeps us happy with quality grass fed proteins. We just eat smaller portions. That said, and back to the original point of the post, it can be done using grocery chickens with more aromatics and some roasting. My parents have always purchased via price. The cheapest turkey, The grocery roma tomatoes--tasteless. The cheapest ground round for burgers full of water that steam---no sear. Tough chewy steaks on sale. Bacon that is so full of fat it shrinks to nothing once cooked. Higher quality protien/organic veg can be an eqal price point with some research....See MoreLet’s talk about funeral homes!
Comments (47)My mother had purchased her interment site decades ago - in her hometown, where she hadn't lived for the decades since. She had also picked out a dress to be buried in, and had shown it to me several times in the years before her final illness. She was in a nursing home in my town, 115 miles away, with hospice. The nursing home (or hospice, I don't recall which) arranged for her remains to be picked up by a local mortuary after death was declared. I arranged the funeral with the funeral home in her hometown, that had been used by my family many times. They arranged to have the body transported to them, handled all of the paperwork (including obtaining the death certificate from my county), and placed the obit that I wrote in the local paper. 3 of my 4 siblings, my aunt and her best friend, and 2 of 5 my nieces came to the small service that we had in a parlor of the funeral home. There was no one else who knew or were friends with her (and I had no friends that I had remained in contact with) left in town. My niece's husband (they lived locally) arranged for the chaplain from his work to give a little homily and lead prayer; I found a musician to play 3-4 of her favorite hymns on guitar. Then all we went to the interment at the cemetery. One of my SILs arranged with someone she knew to prepare and serve a casual lunch in a facility at the cemetery for us. BTW, that was the only family member who did anything - the others never even offered - to arrange or help pay for it all. Mom didn't have any insurance benefit or funds left to help pay. ETA: I did all this really out of respect for my elderly aunt - that it pleased my sister and 2 of her daughters was nice but really not a consideration. My brothers wouldn't have minded either way, but I was glad that the oldest drove up from Tennessee - I hadn't seen him in many years, and probably never will again - I was 7 when he left home at the age of 18 and we were never close as adults. At the time it was rather a stretch for my finances. So, I did negotiate with the funeral home about the charges; in fact, I declined their caskets and found a company that sold and delivered lovely caskets in Cincinnati at a much lower cost....See MoreLet’s talk moss spheres
Comments (1)They have been around for 30 years or that is as far back as I remember seeing them! They are just decorative. The ones I have seen over the years are faux and require no care, other than trying to dust them. They have been out for a while, so I see how they might be making a comeback.
