Help with Small Ornamental Tree to Plant Near House!
Comments (10)Do you prefer evergreen, like a Holly (such as Oakleaf Holly) or deciduous (like a Bloodgood Japanese Maple)? About how close is 'next' to your house? A lot of trees need to be planted a good deal further away than folks originally plan, so you might want a 'Fireglow' Japanese Maple instead of a Bloodgood, for example. Do you like narrow/columnar trees like a Skyrocket Juniper or Emerald Green Arborvitae, or a somewhat broader-based pyramidal tree (such as Boulevard False Cypress), or do you like the rounded crowns seen with some mature maple trees like sugar maple? By 'ornamental' do you mean flowers in Spring (e.g.: redbud, dogwood), colorful foliage (e.g.: Thundercloud purple plum, I believe, or some Japanese Maples such as Fireglow or Crimson Queen) or perhaps even peeling bark (e.g.: Paperbark Maple)? I know you mentioned 'that flowers,' but be mindful many plants that are highly ornamental when they flower do so briefly, and aren't nearly so impressive most of the year. Comments (15)Yes, the room behind the wall is the family/living room. My thought was to bring light in, the back of the house faces due east and the front (this room in question) faces west, so we get great afternoon light. Another thought I had was to open up the wall but only an opening the size of a window, then shutter it like all the other "windows" I think that might be the best of both worlds - allow light to flow through the house OR close the shutter if we want more privacy from the front door. What do think about that?...See MoreLooking for tree for small area near house
Comments (8)The pear would have been too big unless this is a large, multistory house - these are used as street trees etc. Western service-berry might work for you, otherwise maybe a small-growing, regionally adapted flowering crabapple cultivar - local independent outlets may have suitable candidates on display at this time, or whenever the peak spring season is there. I just bought this one, it is one of the best crabs on the market - even has flowers that smell sweet (many Rose Family trees do not). As you can see from the description (below) it is slow-, upright- and small-growing (if 18' in 20 years would be too big for you then you are looking for a shrub instead of a tree). http://www.usna.usda.gov/Newintro/adirond1.html...See Morehelp! back porch steps near fireplace
Comments (35)RES - that may be true for codes in your area and general national codes, but there are at times local codes that says differently. Always good to check before spending a lot of money. I think putting the patio down has caused the issue with needing steps there and eating into the available patio space. Steps down from the patio would have been preferred with the design or the design taken the drop into account from the start for anybody reading this and are at a point in the project where they can fix it. At this point it will be awkward with the placement of the fireplace no matter what you do unless there is the possibility to move or not keep the fireplace. Another option not mentioned is to create a landing in front of the door that also includes that corner spot and then turn the stairs to go alongside the house instead of in front of the fireplace or make the stairs go in all directions from that landing. I think the last part is what I'd do. Then the corner space can be used to put some pots of plants in that corner and the stairs going in all directions will look a little less off and more intentional. Kind of like this deck has steps all around - https://cdn.homeadvisor.com/files/eid/19330000/19335529/1885810_ddetail.jpg?modifyDateTime=1430870981000...See MoreKate
