cabinet height-small kitchen-10 foot ceilings
Comments (9)I had a teeny old kitchen (about 6-9) with 9.5 foot ceiling and I and went to the top with the cabinets on one wall, with a small crown molding to take up the irregularities. The cabinets were (trendy ahead of their time) not the same depth because I needed to allow for a door, so there was a shallow bank breaking up the wall. It did NOT look like a tunnel or the bottom of a pit, and being able to stash seldom used items in the top of the cabinets was marvelous. It was also cheaper than having a soffit built, and prevented the dust-catcher that cabinet tops create....See Moreplease help small kitchen 10 foot ceilings
Comments (13)Amy-- Unfortuntately the idea of bringing down our ceiling does not work due to architectural constriants we have (stairs going upstairs run thru our kitchen) we can't lower the ceiling or soffit at all. When I get home, I will post some pictures of our kitchen as it is now "before" so you can see the size & layout constraints. Florantha, Cpartist, Sabjimata thanks for your posts & opinions as well. Yes, I agree & really like the stacked look & my kitchen can handle stacked, but question will be how high to stack & whether going to ceiling will overwhelm my space or not. If they were 9 feet it would be no question....See MoreHeight of cabinets with 11 foot ceilings?
Comments (4)Personally in a contemporary kitchen I would do a soffit to give a sharp, crisp finish especially if you are doing slab front doors and no crown moulding. 36" base + 18" backsplash + 42" cabinets = cabinets 8 feet above floor. Adding 36" of cabinets above will be costly and they will only be accessible with a large ladder. Looking at "modern kitchen" photos on Houzz there's a mix of door fronts that go to the ceiling, cabinets under a soffit, and open space between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. I perfer not to have open space above the cabinets because it becomes another area to clean but plenty of people like the look....See More10 foot kitchen celings and cabinets
Comments (28)BONUS- going all the way up, with a molding to match (mine are modern, flat panel maple) means I son't have the dust factor collecting on top. Extra cost was minimal, compared to what it would cost me to a) hire a housekeeper to get up there to dust (high ladders are a place I can't go anymore) b) the cost of other furniture to store the seasonal stuff. Oh, yes. I like the look of to-the-ceiling cabinets, but the dust is another very real reason to go this direction. In my classroom at school I have about 3' above my cabinets ... and I hate it. I clean up there about twice a year; it's difficult and nasty, and I have to remove the gunk that kids throw up there: chip bags, actual food, the occasional cafeteria fork....See MoreILoveRed
