Fabric for weed barrier
Comments (2)We found something similar in the storage room last year, and used it over permanent pathways, covered with hay mulch. As soon as it gets dirt on it, the weeds will start sprouting, and by the end of the season it will be full of holes. We're going to mowed pathways (mo' mulch), so I'm taking the stuff up, will probably use it to help smother vegetation in areas with weed issues. We also used some roll-out paper mulch and biodegradable "plastic" film, and both decomposed completely by midsummer. The garden also ate untold numbers of cardboard boxes used as undermulch. Watching how all this works, I've decided to use the synthetics only in foundation shrub beds where the soil is what it is and we can keep a close eye on weeds, and use all biodegradable stuff in the veggie garden. It's good soil, with a healthy appetite. Fabric/synthetic mulch doesn't feed the soil, and we can do better by the soil that serves us. Comments (0)After ten very unsatisfactory years of not really clean clothes, my Maytag Neptune washer has died. I will not fix it because of its lousy cleaning performance AND difficulty with dealing with Maytag customer service. My gut feeling is that I would like a TL rather than a FL for a couple of reasons: 1.) it would seem that using more water would get cleaner clothes, 2.) inability to dye clothes in a FL, 3.) my experience with FL machines has been good. Budget is not a constraint, neither is space. I will need both washer and dryer because the 20 year old Maytag dryer must be about ready to quit one of these days and I might as well replace it while someone else can get some use out of it. BTW, I have some European appliances in my kitchen and have been happy with their performance, so there is NO issue of brand loyalty. I simply want the best machines I can buy to make clean clothes for two active adults. Any and all help will be appreciated. Thank you....See MoreWhite (?) Or am I crazy? (Pics)
Comments (40)In the past we have used the living room mostly for formal entertaining with just adults. When we include the children at parties, we usually do something more casual in the family room, where we have totally kid-proof leather upholstery. Also, we have always had our den/office area set-up as a sitting room rather than an office, and I'm thinking of going for a darker, sort of english-men's-clubby look in there. For some reason, my big fear is dye transfer from blue-jeans, more so than the daily-wear-and-tear thing. I have to kind-of chuckle when I think of deciding which room to invite guests to sit in based on their attire.. I was thinking I could have a pretty throw on the white sofa for the occasional family member who might wander in to sit with a book or something. Also, the room is large enough that there will be other seating, in darker colors, so anyone with apprehension about sitting on the white will have options. Do I sound like I'm trying to talk myself into it? I suppose because it seems to me that white looks better than any of the other lighter-colored options, and also, I wonder if the concerns with stains/dirt/wear would be much less, say with pale blue or gold, than they would with white? I do not see a very dark color in that room, so the colored options are almost as light as the white. Funny, I heard a comment on "The stagers" on HGTV, where the designer was using a white sofa, and made an aside comment that they "never recommended them for their design clients"--only for staging, as they would look grungy in a few months. I thought when I posted this, that I might hear from people who had white, and then regretted it after living with it. However it's interesting that the people who responded who said they actually have a white sofa, all said they had no problems and loved it. Any more white-upholstery owners want to weigh-in? (So far only 5 white-sofa owners have responded.) Comments (6)I've dyed a LOT of clothes using Procion Dyes from Dharma Trading - never used black before, though. They have a great website and great customer service. There are lots of detailed instructions on their website - I've always done the tub dyeing method. Once the dyes are fixed and I've done the final rinse, wash, and dry in the machine they really hold their colors and don't bleed or fade. I don't work for Dharma :-) Ha. I do have a beautiful front loading LG washer and dryer stacked in my kitchen that I longingly look at every day. I bought them with the insurance money I received to replace the machines and the gas furnace I lost when my basement flooded during a storm last August. I made the decision not to put the machines back down the basement because I will flood again plus with having a bad back and knees it would just be easier on me to have them on the main floor. After getting quotes to have the machines installed it was just too costly for me to do. I have been cutting back everywhere I could to save enough to get the machines installed. I am almost there haha I can taste it. I am just waiting on one last pay cheque from my election work. Our hours were capped this election so I didn't make as much as I thought I would plus my first pay was a 3 week time period so a huge amount of taxes was taken off. I am going to get a few more quotes for the electrical, plumbing and venting and see where I am at. My first quote was $2400. Work is also starting on my ceilings in my kitchen and living room which were damaged by another storm almost 2 years ago so once the work is done in the kitchen I am hoping to get the washer and dryer hooked up.
