Rehabing Mini-rose damaged by squirrel

I have two lovely mini-roses, Sweet Chariot, that were damaged by a squirrel. I'm growing these in containers. I lost the first one and I don't know why. The rose was very healthy with two main branches, lots of leaves, buds and new growth. A squirrel bit off about 2/3 of one of the branches. Since the plant had been so healthy, I wasn't worried much. I trimmed the remaining branches of the damaged part and waited for new growth. Instead, the branches gradually died back and eventually, the formerly healthy branch died back too. I planted in a 5-1-1 mix, made sure the mix was damp but not soaked, and moved the plant to a shady area in afternoon ( I live in northern AR, zone 6b or 7). I know the root system had been healthy to support such a healthy plant. What happened?
