Comments (103)Rina, I had that plant for about 5 years. So I was surprised it bloomed already! I have planted one of the pups in mama's place. Doesn't it look small and lonely? It's really almost a foot tall, but it has been a little squished under the other plant. I am going to replace a dying pup over at my neighbor's house. They are in Wisconsin, so they don't even know it is dying. As for all of the other bulbils . . . well, I'll be potting up a bunch to see how it goes. I'll try some of the highly variegated bulbils, too. I have been talking with the city parks, hoping they have a few spots that need an Agave - or 10! Nothing near the kids' play areas, of course, but some of the roads leading into the parks are bare. Just hope they agree with my vision. LOL Here's a funny side story -- when we were taking out the stump, Charlie stepped on one of those 3 green Echeveria agavoides to the right of the pup. I yelled, so he moved his foot and stepped on another one! Surprisingly, they look fine today. I think it is because we are in the dry season and they were a little rubbery instead of firm with plenty of water. Anyhoo - Charlie dodged a bullet there. Comments (3)Not being the agave connoisseur like 'some people' are (not naming a guilty name), this is a new agave on me. Well heck. What can I say? Its really cool, rather un-agave-like in a very interesting way or should I say appealing in that its structural? Its certainly got 'bone structure' to quote Madelene Kahn in 'Paper Moon'. wantanamara you know about the weakness verging on obsession that I have for grasses and I suspect you posted this knowing it would make me jealous because it is kind of grasslike and would look like a million bucks among grasses. They remind me of beargrass and sotol more than a typical agave. The 'Live Wire' is my favorite (whats not to like??) and of course I've already googled and discovered Plants Delights carries it but is currently 'out of stock'. No surprise. Seems everything I look up at P. D. is out of stock these days------what gives??? Not that I have ever forked out $$ to them but I still like to pretend I might. Is that where you got yours? Anyway, they do say its hardy to zone 7a (I think it was 'a' rather than 'b') and it was good for North Carolina in that zone. Do you believe the zone 7 hardiness? Says to avoid winter moisture but then they always say that. To add insult to injury, roselee touts that she picked up a couple of them locally once for the low price of $5 apiece. Give me a break. You guys have all the luck. Editing here. Correction: 'Picked up a couple of BIG ones for $5". Big. Not pups. Totally unfair....See MoreAgave bloom spikes
Comments (11)Here is a photo of an agave bloom spike, taken from my front porch, of my neighbor's (across the street) agave:I have not seen the whole plant, but this is the second time I've seen a spike in five years, and so they must be keeping some of the pups. When my agave bloomed, I removed all the pups, as I felt I no longer had room for it, as I have a much larger one in the yard that is supposed to bloom in the next 20 to 30 years. The one I have left is a Furcraea, which is related to the agave. I may not be around to see it bloom, but when it does, it could reach 55 feet in height. If you grow them from a small plant, you have to plan for the size they will grow into....See Moreroselee z8b S.W. Texas
