I Am So Confused.....

about when to prune my lavender. They've never bloomed this early before. I've read here to prune in the spring and others say the fall. I've read it is best to prune during the hottest month, which would be August here. If I wait that long, my plants will be laying on their sides or split down the middle. It is the end of June, and my lavender has never looked this good; the blooms are at their best, but the plants are starting to fall over from weight of the blooms. I cut my plants back by 1/3 last fall. Was that my mistake?
