What can we complain about when....
Comments (81)Is it hot enough yet?? I can't remember the last summer we had 3 heat waves, let alone only half way through summer. Ugh - I hate this weather, and I hate air conditioning too so I only use it on the hottest afternoons (like yesterday). And then I wait as long as possible because I know that these are times of peak electric load, and the grids may be overloaded. One of the nice things about summers here is that it usually cools off at night, but not last night. If I wanted to live through summers like this I'd move south and at least experience nicer winters! Spedigrees how many years have you been plagued with the JB's? From what I understand they are somewhat cyclical and their population tapers off after so many years. I have lots of fireflies this year, at least more than I have previously noticed. And I don't have a lot of grass, but I do have a little meadow and a lot of natural areas, and the only thing I do to the lawn is topdress with compost and spread dolomite lime annually....See MorePlease advice - neighbour always complaining
Comments (7)Your choice of words indicates that you may have been treating her like a senile old woman. In which case, I don't blame her for complaining. However, she may be the type of person that complains about everything to everybody and you just happen to be handy. I doubt if there is a thing you can do about it. She might be a bit disturbed, in which case, you could be looking at more trouble. I would think seriously about moving if you could. If the walls and floors are that thin, it's probably a fire trap....See Morewhat don't you like about your house?
Comments (54)I have a 50's ranch and about the only thing i would change is the layout of the kitchen.I'd like to have a big window in the kitchen with the sink below it,and have the kitchen be one big room instead of kitchen and dinette area.We do have a formal DR though. I don't like the popcorn ceilings either, but like the op said, that's an easy fix. I have and will take shower curtains over shower doors any time, hate the doors, and my shower curtains don't cling. They have magnets on the liner, and the outer curtain is soft and flowy, but not into the tub. I'm so glad when we got this house, that we got a ranch and not a 2 story, they're (2 story or more) aare the pits as we age. I need and have garden space also,so you may want to consider the yard size. We have 1 bathroom also and it's served us well all these 46 years with the 4 kids and others. Don't get wrapped up in the unecessary things, look for good bones, and keep in mind what it is you want, cosmetics VS needs etc. Good luck Kathi...See MoreJust February, but can I complain about Easter?
Comments (67)"People coming from Russia at that time did not often want it to be thought they might be communists" maifleur, I've read dozens of books on 20th century US and European history and this narrative you keep repeating differs from what I've read. The US didn't immediately warm up to the new Soviet Union for geopolitical reasons as much as anything. When Lenin took power in 1917, he withdrew the country from active conflict. That allowed Germany to concentrate its forces on the Western front (where the allies and ultimately the US were fighting). On the other hand, anti-German sentiment was quite strong some time earlier because of the war (started in 1914, renaming of Kitchener was in 1916 just as one of many examples). The Soviet regime was new and in the early years, few Americans knew much about it. The Germans were severely punished by the Treaty of Versailles and not forgiven by the western powers anytime before WW2 started. If you had a choice in the teens to 40s of being known as having German or Russian ancestors, most would have chosen Russian. It would be wrong to not mention that Germany (West Germany through the fall of the wall) was the bulwark of the West during the Cold War and has served as the anchor point and foundation of European recovery, peace and prosperity for the last 60+ years. And continues to function as that foundation....See Morebossyvossy
