Hi jbhillinois- How you arrange this room really depends on how the room will be used and by whom. Will it be just for reading/games by two adults? Will it be used for homework and games by children who are sometimes accompanied by adults? If it will be used for homework, then you would want a good sized square or rectangular table with 4 chairs in proximity to the electrical outlets (children's homework requires computers these days), and that table can be used for games as well. A window seat for curling up with a book as Manon showed is a great idea. If you will be reading together with a child, then a sofa would be a great idea. If not, then separate chairs would do, and you need end tables. If you do not put an electric fireplace in your fireplace shell, you can build in some shelves. You can also build in some shelves elsewhere with places for games, art supplies. If you have children, you might want to consider an arts and crafts corner delineated with a different floor covering. That room has such great light!

Great, Sally. Hope we didn't overwhelm you with too much information. Most of us do go for a holistic approach to space since no single element exists in a room by itself; they connect through layout, style, finishes, palettes. Sometimes the "problem child" isn't the actual problem, or the only problem, and getting a bunch of alternative suggestions can be useful. Your room is lovely as is, frankly. If you are getting wood flooring, that will definitely modernize the room without your doing anything else. Feel free to post again with all the details at the outset--i.e. not loving the paint, getting wood floors, etc.--then people won't chime in with too much information. Good luck with your new home. Designers could produce a space plan and concept design for you, but they aren’t going to shop for used stuff that equates to that concept. You’d pay way more than you would getting them to purchase new from to the trade sources. And new to get trade sources would be the better option if you want a style coherent look and can’t DIY create that yourself by your own thrift shopping.

Thanks for trying to help. I will answer your questions which also helps me to think it through: no children, but visiting grandchildren. -it is not a new build, but a remodel of a 50’s ranch. The addition is the covered porch and the extension of the kitchen. -our “games room” (ping pong) will be in the finished basement. -my sense is that the family room is less formal than the living room and will be for relaxation and TV watching. Maybe incorporating a desk. -I could switch the family and dining but it would be an awfully large dining room that wouldn’t get much use as it’s just 2 of us most of the time. The addition will have large windows across the back. Lots more light than the room now labeled family. Planning a bench under the windows. Plus the new kitchen/dining will have a different floor from the rest of the house. If this helps and you have other ideas please share. Thanks again.
