Flooring Design Dilemma living room

Do you really need an area rug in the living room?

I like to the look, we are in the midst of getting the house for sale and we just took the old one out.......hubby thinks it looks fine and bigger without it........i personally say we cant match up the wood floor (looks perfect) to the sides where there was no area carpet........ help!

Perfect timing. I’m wondering the same with our floors.Rug or no?

Could you take a photo of your room and the areas of concern? How often do you use the room? I am not be a typical buyer but when we were potential buyers and I saw area rugs I wondered about the condition of the floor beneath it. A lovely floor is a selling point, in my opinion.

We just removed our dated area rug and have a lovely and unblemished wood floor which spans the length and width of the room. . Is yours stained wood? Ours has a poly coating and - based on the rest of the floor - doesn’t pick up or show scratches from shoes,etc.

We have allergies to consider while I assume you’re considering what will appeal most to buyers. We do go back and forth about whether a rug helps ground a room, being a focal point.

The answer will be: "It depends". Staging is a great way to give a STRONG first impression without spending tons of money on renovations.

Area rugs are one way to present a room or a space. An area rug that is TOO SMALL for the space will have a NEGATIVE impact whereas a perfectly situation rug will add sophistication.

It all depends on what you have to work with and what you might be trying to hide. If you have discolouration in the hardwood because of sun light exposure to the perimeter of the room, you can one of two things.

#1. Put in a rug that fits the discolouration and hope for the best

#2. Remove the rug and allow the under-exposed wood flooring to "catch up" to the rest of the room. Should take about 6months or so.

I have never had a problem with the rubber waffle type pads ruining my wood floors. Rubber on vinyl will discolor the flooring. You can buy fabric backed rugs and since it will not be in a traffic area you won't need to worry about it slipping but it will not scratch the floor. If you get one with a rough back I would still use something under it because it will slide when you move the table for your laptop use and then you will end up with scratching the floor eventually.

Something modernizing about this rug. Who knows what color it'd look like in your room with a green sofa? maybe a pebble / mineral tone idk, for a soft, low-contrast look. I have at least ten Oriental rugs of different sizes, and they do go with nearly every style. I would pick one with several different colors in your room, warm and cool, to set off all that light furniture in your beautiful space. Put one in the dining room, hall, family room, bedroom, wherever you have bare floors. With all your light wood rich and varied colors will look wonderful and give life and depth to your spaces.
