I have tried a few odd experiments with growing lettuce in DWC. First, I was getting tired of starting the seed in trays or whatever and then carefully transferring them into the cups I was using for my DWC and having to keep the water level high enough to reach the tiny seedling roots (sometimes having to top water some seedlings so they could catch up as I was dropping the level of the nutrient so there would be some air for the roots too. Next, I tried some floating rafts for the lettuce. They tended not to be stable enough to support full sized plants or some seedlings would get water logged and others would dry out. Most recently, I have been floating a thick layer of large perlite on the surface of the nutrient solution and simply letting the seedlings grow in that. It did work but that system isn't pleasing me either. As the lettuce plants get big and heavy they tend to sink down killing the lower leaves. I have plenty of bubbles going so the plants survived the deep submersion but it was kinda messy to deal with. Starting seeds on cotton balls on the perlite was easy though and they are relatively easy to transplant that way. I'm still in search for "easiest/cheapest" way to grow lettuce. (since most of the year it is too hot outside here to grow it out in dirt, indoor hydroponics will continue to provide lettuce for us at least 9 months of the year.) Anyway, I'm now looking into using wicks to see If I can plant seeds directly in the cups and bypass the whole seed starting/transplanting step. I just need to figure out why the mop strings don't seem to be wicking water.

IÂll be interested to see if others have different theories on this, but as long as the ground isnÂt frozenÂand the temps are warm enough that IÂm not freezing my handsÂI plant and transplant stuff whenever I get around to it. If I can find time, there are a few things I want to move this fall/winter yet too. If possible, keep as much soil attached to the roots as you can, dig them up and replant immediately (donÂt leave them sitting around out of the ground or temporarily in a pot for a couple days), and then water them in well and donÂt water again unless everything else needs it too if you have a dry winter. Absolutely, positively donÂt feed them anything at all until spring. The roots will be reestablishing themselves over winter anytime the ground isnÂt frozen. IÂve never moved any woody plants, so IÂm not as sure about the one youÂre describing as woody. If it falls into the category of "perennial" (sub-shrub) rather than shrub, I think youÂd be ok with that too. But IÂm not familiar with a woody plant with a daisy-like flower, so IÂm just not sure about that one. So from my point of view...... go for it, Skybird

Most people I know who have an iPad (or any other tablet) use it on WiFi. There are iPads and other tablets that can also use a cellular data connection. It's certainly a useful feature to have but it is far from essential and is probably most beneficial to those who travel frequently. Frankly, I think a 7" tablet is a little small to be used as a desktop or laptop substitute on a regular basis, especially for web browsing. I also think that the iPad Mini is a bit pricey. I'd suggest spending more for a full size iPad or looking at one of the 7" Android alternatives like the Nexus 7.

Thanks mike. I guess I should have said 'reboot' in my initial post rather than restart. Yes, I rebooted several times to get the opportunity to enter the security password. This pad does not have cellular capability so when wi fi is gone, it is disconnected. It certainly used to connect to other networks, but I haven't checked lately. I was beginning to think that the pad was retaining wifi connection, but today it is again back to disconnected, still with the blue check indicating that it is connected. The only difference from several days ago, is that the password on 'client ID' is still showing. I had assumed that the showing password was somehow involved in the wifi retention. I have considered 'forget your WiFi', but I don't know where to get the ssid. I suppose it is built in but I don't understand this stuff that well. Edit for addition: OK, I got brave (or could have been stupid) and 'forgot the network' and at least for the time being, the pad is reconnected. It was easy to reconnect because my regular network was still waiting for me to re choose it and it immediately asked for the password and I was properly connected. The password isn't showing in 'client ID'. Perhaps it was never the appropriate place to add it anyway!? I do see a couple of possible differences in the settings that I wrote down if things didn't work. There may have been a difference in the DNS setting (whatever that is) (or it might have been a hand written typo on my part) but the new setting's last 7 chars are now 171.2.226 and I scribed 172.2.226. And under the area of HTTP Proxy (whatever that is), OFF is highlighted, and before there was a space below where it said URL. Was it waiting for some website? So, for the time being, things are in order. It took 2.5 days to lose the network the last time, so we'll see.?!
