New Walls a Mess - Any Ideas
Comments (1)You could get a better drywaller. Using the proper primer and paint will not help if the patching and seams are actual humps. The good primers and paint will only make them look worse. The best thing to use on crappy drywall is a high build primer or cheap flat paint with a high chalk content that will hide the seams the best because the paint film is thick. Anything with a sheen will highlight poor drywall, especially when the sunlight comes in....See Morecontractor messed up, can you think of a downspout fix?
Comments (11)Here are 2 more pics, Darel, Maybe you can see what the other side looks like and if it can run that way. It is approx 2 inches higher on the garage than it is on the porch area. The contractor was asked what we was going to do and all I could get out of him after I said he was not putting gutters across the top of the steps, was " I have no idea" and " It can't be run it to the garage gutter" and " can I build your deck next?" I understand it is really his problem but since he can refuse to finish and already has his money, it really could be my problem. I could refuse to pay him for a small retaining wall he's half done. My husband thought the contractor could use his concrete saw and cut thru his work, put the gutter in under like it was supposed to be, and fill in the top with matching color mortared brick along the side. would that work? Do we have enough "fall"? Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreAnny ideas to cover up a mess?
Comments (3)Hi anneliese, I agree with Ken that pictures of your situation would help us understand it better. "...we had the digging for 14 piers to stabilize a shifting slab house." Your local building code and the builder of the house are responsible for preventing a shifting or cracking slab. The concrete slab should have enough reinforcing steel bars in it to prevent cracking and the slab should be "floating" on a bed of sand to isolate it from shifts in the subsoil and/or rock formations on your site. If your house is relatively new, it might have been covered by a warranty against such foundation problems. "It will be month before all will settle and I would like to camouflage it without slowing down the settling." I'm not sure whether you mean it will take months to settle, or just one month. If just one month, seeding the open earth won't take effect soon enough to help. If you meant it will take months to settle, then filling the soil with a root structure might interfere with good settling of the earth. Just out of curiosity, does your house have guttering to prevent rain runoff from the roof from falling on the open earth? And was there a foundation planting of shrubs, perennials and things in the foundation area that got excavated? If so, do you plan on making a new foundation planting? Maybe you should consider just raking the earth level and re-raking it to keep it level as settling occurs. Did the contractor who did the pier work have any suggestions as to how you should treat the disturbed earth? Seeding the disturbed earth with a fast growing groundcover might conceal the earth, but could just create a nuisance in your landscaping plans. Pictures could help. ZM...See MoreDark kitchen. Any ideas on how to lighten it up and general design ?'s
Comments (21)Are you remodeling because the kitchen is dark, or for some other reason? If only because of the lighting issue, there are many solutions to that, and some have been suggested already. I don't think borrowing light from the sunroom is going to be helpful. Pass thru openings aren't a good solution unless the room you're borrowing light from is super bright, and you'll lose storage; plus you have 2 doors that swing into that wall. They'll be awkward if hung to swing in the opposite directions. Painting the walls a lighter color with higher LRV will help, as will a new, brighter backsplash, and possibly a new lighter countertop.. No one has mentioned LEDs above the cabinets, but that can be helpful too. If you can't increase the window size, maybe you can add a skylight above the sink area. At the least, dropping a pendant closer to the work area should help. Painting the island to match the other cabinetry will increase brightness as well. Love the floors!...See Morebpath
