people with open shelves or no uppers
Comments (34)breezy, i am looking forward to seeing your backsplash sooner rather than later. a not so subtle hint :-) michaelmcc, looking forward to seeing your kitchen! i agree grout is very tricky. i am struggling with grout right now in my bathrooms. artemis, do you think 19" is higher than usual for hanging shelves? i wasn't sure how high to put the shelves, but assumed that it should be at the same level as bottom of uppers. but if i hang it lower, i can access the items more easily.. rococogurl, those tiles are so pretty close up! though not sure i can swing ann sacks in the budget. i never knew their tile used to be more affordable. allison, that's good to know there are no splatters. but you are seriously going to redo your tile?? gorgeous as is, though i must admit, i would love to see you do it first so i can see how the morroccan tile will look (these are tiles that i have been dying to use, but am afraid to use) rosie, i am also only 5'2 so you bring up good points. i had been thinking to do two shelves one, on top of another, but it sounds like a good idea to maybe limit it to only one shelf and hang artwork since the top shelf might be out of reach for me. firsthouse, I love how clean your kitchen shelves are against the white. just curious, what is the benefit of having just a 1 inch backsplash versus no backsplash? i am getting quotes for countertops so i need to figure out what I should ask for now....See More80% done - what do I do about backsplash?
Comments (15)Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate your feedback. The tile I have preliminarily chosen is a marble w/grey and beige undertones. It's a lighter than the tile Bill V. posted, but I tend to like lighter colors. I think it will work if I choose a grey-ish taupe color that's a little darker to paint the walls. I discovered something yesterday after posting. I suppose this isn't an uncommon problem, but I wonder whether there is anything I can do to minimize this. I noticed that the counter/bar on the windowed wall is level, but the windows above it are not quite. So, at one end of the counter, the distance from the counter to the window sill is about 4 1/2 inches, but at the other end its closer to 5 inches. It's somewhat noticeable to me, just by "eyeballing" it. I assume a backsplash, then, is a bad idea because the difference would be more noticeable, no?...See MoreWhat to do about backsplash issue?
Comments (6)Use the same material as your counter to cover the windowsill areas, but make the one over the lower window is thick enough (underneath) - or shimmed up -to come out even with the height of the higher windowsill when covered with "matching" thickness of the counter top material. You could get tricky and have these pieces cut with a little lip to extend down to the counter surface, or fudge it with some other material or paint to blend in the gap between the counter and the edge of windowsill trim piece (s). Comments (33)BeeYOOTifulllll!!! I don't know which I like better, for me, I would go with the white ones, but the green is gorgeous! We had green counters in our last house and loved them. However, I love the white because you can change the accent colors of your kitchen much easier. OTOH, the green will be something distinct that not any other house you go to will likely have...that is a plus for me! Whichever way you go, I think it will be simply gorgeous!...See Morehummingalong2
