no upper cabs-- open shelving instead?
Comments (47)I think everyone has pretty much covered this, but I thought I would add my experience. My kitchen has original (1920) cabinets and no upper cabinets. When we moved in we added some inexpensive shelving. I really like it. It's really easy to just grab a plate or bowl or whatever. The only advice I would have for you is to try to keep the color of the things on the shelves all in the same shade. It helps it look less cluttered. You can follow the link to pictures of my kitchen. Here is a link that might be useful: Kitchen Pictures...See MoreOpen shelves under an upper cabinet
Comments (19)Wooh we're in the middle of a blizzard! Being trapped inside makes me want to cook. Herbflavor~I originally had wanted everything in drawers, but my kitchen will be around 8'x10' so I was trying to free up as much space as possible to make sure I don't have to store things in the basement or something. I was testing last night on my toaster oven which happens to be be the exact height and depth of the (maybe floating shelves) I would use, and it was perfect for my arms reach. I store my mixing bowls under counter (although not in a drawer), and it's a pain. I use a lot of mixing bowls. Needinfo1~I know my little place will be far from Parade of Homes worthy. It is a very modest little house (960 sq ft), and the little U shaped kitchen will NOT be open to the living room. It will be nice to not have to worry about keeping my kitchen amazingly beautiful so I can really cook. Oh, and did I mention I'm a messy cook. : (...See MoreSolid wood or a mix of glass and open shelving for upper cabinets?
Comments (13)We're twins. I'm going through the same thought process myself. First, I found this blogger's thoughts on open shelving to be thorough and helpful: http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2014/12/honest-thoughts-on-open-shelving-in.html Second, here are pictures of my old kitchen (inset cabinets) and old living room (traditional overlay cabinets). Notice that on my white cabinetry, glass cabinets actually were the DARKEST thing in the room, not light and airy like I'd imagined. I stored either bright white or clear things in the kitchen shelves and black electronics in the living room shelves. For this reason I'm considering textured glass, which reflects a lot more light back into the room. (I'm also considering solid wood or wood with the bottom shelf open, but I'll make my own post about that when I start having anxiety attacks about the indecision). I know you can light cabinets, but I want my cabinets to make me smile first thing in the morning, before I've turned on the lights. ;)...See MoreUpper into open shelving at a corner
Comments (4)We ended up butting the shelves to the full cabinets so that they got 2 points of contact. its been 4 years with no sagging, The shelf on the left has plates and the one on the right cast iron pots so we definitely use them. I think it really make the space feel open. I apologize for the state of my kitchen, but we have 3 kids and use the hell out of it...See Morejakabedy
