I couldn't resist. I don't want to leave my kitchen!! Finally having my appliances back (although the d/w isn't hooked up yet), I didn't have to run to WaWa (those of you in PA/NJ know what that is) for breakfast. Brewed some coffee, fried some eggs. I missed doing that!

What do we think about this gap? My GC and I talked generally (before the granite was installed) about putting a decorative piece on either end of this cabinet run). I can't envision exactly what he's talking about. Anyone have any ideas?

I am using a similar backsplash. My new cabinets and countertops are close to the colours of yours.

First off, congratulations on the progress! Things are looking good. I think subway shape tiles are a good choice for this kitchen. You have a lot of different spaces with jogs and interruptions. The rectangular shape will draw the eye along around the room and help to unify and elongate it.

I think the pattern with the squares and pencil sounds really pretty by itself, but might interrupt that nice flow.

What color pencil were you thinking of? A contrasting (i.e., darker) pencil might give you some extra pizzazz while continuing the horizontal flow of the backsplash. It's not necessary, but it should look good. :)

I don't think you need any tiles over the bar. If you want it for the finish (especially if the join of the surface to the wall isn't 100% pretty), you might consider running a single row of tile with the pencil trim on top, if it'll fit under the window. Or a similar sized little splash of the counter material (do you have scraps?).

Unless you think the bar is going to become a real prep area with a lot of splash and splatter (even if it's the kids with watercolors). Then there's a functional reason to do a full backsplash. It'll also look fine to continue the backsplash there.

The subways in Bellcrests link are really nice. I think they would look great and you can incorporate your own colors through your pencil or accents. Bellcrest do you know the name and color of the subways in your link? Very pretty.

I love the travertine floor, i would use the same stone on the backsplash. Maybe in different size with some accents. I love the idea of carrying the floor color into the backsplash. you could set it on a diagonal to mimic the floor.

I'd go with a tile that had both grey and brown undertones, so as to bring the stainless, countertop, and cabinets together, something kinda like this:

Do you have any other info about the kitchen picture you posted? Any other pictures? That looks very similar to what I'm thinking about for my kitchen. Are they natural maple cabinets? Granite?

Cabinets are maple, and the grainte is from right here in Maine, called Deer Isle granite. It's got black, grey, white, and salmon colored spots to it. Keep in mind the reason I took the pics was for the backsplash, but here are some more:

The kitchen is exactly what I was trying to describe to my designer. Now I can just show him the picture if you don't mind. Could you tell me the name/color of the tiles in the backsplash?

In response to marilyn234 question about tiles used in the photo I linked to......

I can't remember where I found that photo so can't give credit for it, but it is my inspiration for my own backsplash. I am planning on using 3 x 6 matte almond s/o tiles dal-tile. The mosaic glass tile for accent that I have chosen is also dal-tile 1 x 1 sonterra collection scarlet colour.

I love the backsplash that Bill Vincent posted also. so many nice kitchens! It is difficult to make decisions.

Gayle, I wish I could. That's a backsplash I did the beginning of last summer, and unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it. I DO know that there are many very much like it, though, and they're not to hard to find. It's a very popular flooring color variation because of the fact that it goes with just about anything.

Thanks, everyone! I really appreciate your feedback. The tile I have preliminarily chosen is a marble w/grey and beige undertones. It's a lighter than the tile Bill V. posted, but I tend to like lighter colors. I think it will work if I choose a grey-ish taupe color that's a little darker to paint the walls.

I discovered something yesterday after posting. I suppose this isn't an uncommon problem, but I wonder whether there is anything I can do to minimize this. I noticed that the counter/bar on the windowed wall is level, but the windows above it are not quite. So, at one end of the counter, the distance from the counter to the window sill is about 4 1/2 inches, but at the other end its closer to 5 inches. It's somewhat noticeable to me, just by "eyeballing" it. I assume a backsplash, then, is a bad idea because the difference would be more noticeable, no?

No, it won't be anymore noticeable than it is right now. If you'd shown me the picture above and not said anything, I don't think I would've seen the difference, but now that you've mentioned it, it's pretty obvious. That won't change once you install your backsplash, so long as one piece of tile will span from the countertop to the sill. Unless you tell people, you'll be the only one who sees it.
