selling our home..need advice on curb appeal
Comments (35)You guys are awesome! I finally got back here today to see if anyone responded and I couldn't believe the number of people who were willing to help. I love the ideas. I'll have to talk to my dh about the shrubs. I like the idea of hiring a professional to trim. The t.v. antennae was actually removed a couple of weeks ago, so I'll have to give my dh a high five for that one! The front door is painted red, but could use a new coat. The house is brick, so we will not paint it, but we have always thought that a lighter trim color might help. The windows are vinyl, so there's nothing we can do there. The entire side of the house (both sides) has a dark wood vertical siding - not sure what that's called). We should probably paint that a lighter tan? The flowers around the lightpost were the ones that were there when we bought the house. Last summer, I changed those to pansies, I believe. There is a nice selling point to this house - our back yard was beautifully landscaped by the former owners. I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to landscaping or taking care of plants, but I am going to try really hard this spring to get the back yard ready. It has a water feature that I'm also clueless about. I may need to get some help with that. I'll attach a picture of our back yard, so you can see our true selling point. The pictures taken in August were taken on move-in day, thus the van in the back yard. Any pictures taken last summer would not be suitable for viewing since I was due for baby #4 in September - not a lot was done to the back yard! Some occasional weeding - that was about it. The rest of my energy was used up on the vegetable garden. Phew! Thank you again! Caryn Here is a link that might be useful: back yard...See MoreHelp needed to spruce up Curb Appeal!!
Comments (10)I travel to the UK yearly and have experienced many gardens there. The English Garden has evolved dramatically over time, incorporating influences from numerous extraordinary designers and styles. This means very different concepts to different people. It may be that your idea of the English Garden is that of the cottage gardens, filled with exuberant (or subtle) combinations of perennials, shrubs and trees. The public Gardens, such as those found in St. James and Hyde Park reflect this style. These gardens tend to require significant horticultural knowledge and time to maintain in order to keep them looking their best. However, that does not mean it is impossible to create the likeness of that style with reduced knowledge and maintenance. I would love to help you think through the possibilities for creating an “English Garden” for your front yard. However, if is difficult to see what dimensions you are working with. Some broader pictures from different angles would be helpful. I will try to post some appropriate pictures tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone...See MoreHow to spruce up the curb appeal?
Comments (9)I think the house is beautiful and elegant ... with lovely, graceful landscaping as it is. Of course we can’t see everything in a picture, but from what’s shown, I don’t see much I’d change. All of that hardscaping had to be very expensive, and I think they did an excellent job with the design of it. If you decide on it, I’d live with it a while to see how the plantings evolve with the seasons, then decide if you want to change anything or add to it....See MoreSeeking Advice: Curb Appeal (our first home)
Comments (11)Before doing any landscaping, examine if there are drainage issues, and be sure to fix those first. consider raising the grade to meet the stoop level so there is neither a step or the appearance of an unfinished grade. Bringing up the grade would make things looks better. If you can't expand the width of the walk to match the porch opening, at least widen it with an 8" brick or paver strip down each side. And create an expanded apron connecting it to the porch. I wouldn't confine the porch with plantings, but some strategically located to coordinate with the posts would be fine. Trees off of the corners would help the house seem integrated with the surroundings....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
