We went for Italian food to celebrate a very special occasion. I had this pasta with tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, pine nuts and mascarpone cheese. Delicious!

I just now finished a late dinner of chicken breast, mushrooms and broccoli in a parmesan cream sauce over egg noodles.

I wasn't very hungry so I just had cottage cheese with blueberries and cherries that I had just picked.

When I was little I always liked it when mom made chipped beef (she would make biscuits, not toast). Haven't had it in many decades!

I used to make SOS for my kids. For some reason I think the name came from the military. You basically make a white sauce and stir some chipped beef, serve over toast. It’s actually good. I used to make creamed tuna the same way.

I haven't had SOS since I was in the military. I'll be able to say that on my last day alive, it's not for me.

I think Stouffers (sp?) had a frozen version of SOS. I remember liking it as a kid, but it has been a while.

Tonight we are going to Landrys seafood restaurant with a couple that were our next door neighbors and best friends. I get a freebie for my birthday so we do this every year in June. He has been ill so we put it off a little.

I am looking forward some delicious seafood. Everything is wonderful there. I get a free appetizer of firecracker shrimp too! Yum!

I had the SOS aka slop. Husband LOVED it. Amiee HATED it. Chip nibbled but couldn't force more than a few bites. Tim ate all of his and never said a word about it which I expected as he will eat anything I give him and never voice anything negative about it. I could barely prepare it. LOL. I made an announcement after dinner that I will NEVER make this stuff again and whoever was still hungry could have a big helping of apple crisp that was about to come out of the over. They all cheered except my husband. LOL. I didn't eat but will probably have a ham and swiss on rye or the apple crisp LOL.

We just had fish tacos, with fish from the freezer. Not sure what they were, DH caught them a while back. Had a side of tater tots. Note to self: don't ask DH what he wants with his fish tacos. :)

Tonight we had rib eye steaks, corn on the cob, potato salad and garlic bread! Forgot to sauté the Vidalia onions and mushrooms, darn!

I worked in the yard until late (actually, mostly trying to get the patio cleaned up. Between the neighbor's honey locust that is constantly dropping debris, and the ants that are constantly pushing the sand up between the pavers, it takes over an hour just to sweep. Plus still cleaning up paint chips from the siding replacement.)

Anyway, so needed quick and easy: half a chicken breast, zucchini and mushrooms cooked together in a mini wok with garlic, salt and pepper.

I love chopped beef on toast with gravy. That is one of my favorite and have not had it in a long time. Now I want it!

My mother used to make chipped beef, also, never heard it referred to as SOS. With her good creamy white sauce, it was a family favorite, served with fresh picked green peas or asparagus or wilted spinach. Like Socks, I remember tuna as a source of protein with the same white sauce and veggies, perhaps with sliced hardboiled eggs on top. We had it served over toast or broad egg noodles.

No complaints from this family, as I recall. Can't imagine calling such simple, elegant food slop.

I'm not sure what there is to hate about almost anything served with a good cream sauce, lol. The same sauce with shrimp, chicken, mushrooms and beef works well, too.

I agree, rhizo. My family loves tuna or salmon in cream sauce served on toast and request it often. It is such an easy quick meal to prepare. They also like assorted veggies in a cream sauce, though we rarely have that.

Mama, your description is not the universally accepted version of SOS. There are ground beef recipes, but a creamy white sauce is the base. My mother made that, too, lol.

A delicious cream sauce is the base, with sauteed onions, ground beef, and mushrooms....delicious! Serve it over mashed potatoes, rice, noodles, or toast. Any kind of veggies go with this.

Rhizo I made it the way my husband likes it. Lol. Once in a blue moon I do make him something he requests, notice I said once in a blue moon because he only asks for foods that are unhealthy. The gravy came from a package...powder that you add a cup of water to...Ahh Haaa...bet your now understanding the **slop**

I went to Costco today and picked up one pizza on the way out. I brought that home around 2 for a late lunch. I'm trying to convince myself that is is ok not to cook supper tonight. Lol!

Another long day doing yard work so again something quick and easy. I had a "taco" salad. A little ground beef mixed with a couple of tablespoons of refried beans, salsa, cilantro from the garden, and mixed veggie/green salad all mixed up together in a bowl with a dollop of fat free sour cream on top.

Raee, leave off the sour cream and I'd be quite happy eating your dinner.

I breaded chicken breasts and oven fried them. Made hamburger buns this morning so we had crispy chicken sandwhiches with lettuce and tomato and cole slaw. I made extra chicken which I put in the freezer and will likely use in a salad.

I threw a boneless chicken breast on the grill, & made stove top stuffing. DH had a tomato dressed with apple cider vinegar and malt vinegar to go with his chicken and stuffing.

We were out today so grabbed wings for dinner.

I had a strawberry shortcake. Fried up a buttermilk biscuit in butter, whipped some heavy cream and sliced strawbs. It was so good I think I'll do it again today. The local strawberries are just coming in now - delish!

I think chipped beef SOS is wonderful.

I have been using the Hot Wings sauces I got from Costco as cooking sauces. They come in a package of 3, with a spicy Asian sauce, parmesan garlic, and a sweet barbecue type sauce. Yesterday I cooked some Italian sausage with broccoli and added the Asian spicy sauce and it turned out delicious.

@Raven- do you have a link or a recipe for your Hamburger Stroganoff Casserole? That sounds really good. Thanks.

During our time in the military a few years ago, DH kept saying how much he disliked SOS. I was curious and asked him to describe it. It didn't sound too bad to me, so I decided to try to make it. He said if I did I would end up tossing it in the trash. I added some spices and chopped celery. I thought it was good and the kids loved it. They challenged him to at least try one bite. He did, and then went for a full helping! Hah! Said it was nothing like what the mess hall served. I tried it once in the officers club dining room, and saw his point. It was very bland and tasteless. I still occasionally make it, but now we call it ABBOT. (Alternate Beef Bourguignon On Toast) Lol

We love creamed chipped beef and have it for a special Sunday breakfast over toasted English muffins.

It was very good the only thing I would change is more sour cream. I will use the whole container next time to make it creamier. It needed a little more seasonings for my taste but that's an individual thing.

Thank-you, I've just printed it off. I will make a note about adding more sour cream. I tend to add more seasonings as well so will do that, too. The recipe sounds good and above all easy.

I think one characteristic flavor of classic stroganoff comes from using a good sherry. Never "cooking sherry", that stuff is garbage. Add it carefully so that it's present but not too overpowering.

PS - I think stroganoff is better with cut-up beef in smallish pieces that have been browned. I hesitate to say "stew meat" because there's no telling what that is but you can buy something whole and cut it yourself.

Lol...I also have wondered about stew beef...thinking it could be cut from an undesirable part of the cow.. I make a decent beef strog but I use a sirloin roast and cut into bite size pieces.

I had some Angus ground beef I needed to use and found a quick and easy recipe for it. It fit the bill and was pretty good too.

My father had stories of the Depression, I don't think his grandmother thought any cow had an undesirable part. Good cooks made surprisingly delicious dishes out of inexpensive cuts.

I knew I was leaving town this morning so I called the farm yesterday and ordered 6 extra tenderized cube steaks. So I am making chicken fried steaks, whipped potatoes, country gravy and green beans for todays supper. Comfort food.

Just pork chops, potatoes and corn. But we bought a flat of strawberries this morning, and I made some freezer jam.

I put some sugar on some and left to macerate. I made a panna cotta in some wine glasses and put the macerated berries on top for dessert.

I am making homemade tacos tonight with chips and salsa.

Chicken wings, guacamole and low carb chips, sliced farmers market tomatoes. Will probably add a slice or two of cantaloupe as well.

Toasted bacon and tomato sandwich, rhubarb crisp and ice cream for dessert.

We went out. DH had soft tacos and a taco salad, and I had McDonalds.

I've spent the day sewing. DGS came and cut the grass, while his mom and sister watched a movie and went to the garage sale next door.

When I cooked in a restaurant I made SOS. I browned the hamburger and then made a white sauce for over it and added some beef base for flavor. Customers loved it. I also made beef stroganoff. We always had left over beef. I made a sauce with just sour cream and mushroom soup. I added mushrooms to it too. It was very good. Sometimes my boss would buy the sliced deli beef to make the SOS. I served all 3 things over mashed potatoes or egg noodles. DH was in Viet Nam and he doesn't like SOS either.

For supper tonight we had hamburgers. I had a salad with mine and DH and DS had corn on the cob with theirs.

I had a tuna salad sandwich on toast.

I'm going to have pork chops, perogies with carmalized onions, and corn on the cob today. Hot fudge sundae for dessert if anyone wants dessert. I made homemade chocolate sauce yesterday.
