What does this living room need? Should I go with a darker rug?

We just got our floors redone and they ended up lighter than expected. The furniture is fairly new as well so needing advice on how to love my living room.

Comments (6)You need to think about the quality of light as well as the amount of light. Having all downlighting will result in your ceiling being dark, which will make the room seem more closed in. You may consider adding some flush ceiling or close to ceiling fixtures, to provide your ambient light layer. This will also soften the harsh shadows that can result from downlighting. Try standing under a recessed light and have someone observe the shadows on your face. To determine the light coverage, I found an extremely useful guide from Juno Lighting. Look in the back of their lighting catalog and it will show beam spreads for various fixtures and ceiling heights. Most have the option of seeing it in your room, as I did below, so you can play around with sizes, colors, and patterns. Comments (25)Sounds like a fireplace re-do might be a longer-term fix. In the meantime, I'd paint the mantle a dark brown, a similar colour to your end tables. It's not trim and shouldn't be white. It pops out too much in the white colour. Another idea that doesn't involve any ripping-out is to go right over the existing mantle using a mantle slipcover in wood.
