Traffic Island Ideas ?
Comments (7)There was an earlier thread on this same topic I believe back in Feb of 08 but here's what I recommended the last time: Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepsis) - an attractive lower growing native grass approximately 2 feet high - turns a lovely golden yellow in the fall and is small enough not to obstruct traffic and is drought tolerant once established. You could make a simple elegant statement and populate one or both islands with simply this grass. Daylilies are nice and they are cheap but they require several deadleafing sessions after they bloom to look their best plus an an annual fall cutback whereas the Dropseed requires only a spring cut back. I think you'll save more money on the maintenance with the grasses....See MoreIs Gazelle or Oryx manure a good choice of fertilizer?
Comments (9)Wonderful pics and a real pleasure to see them. Thanks for sharing them with us. However i think I can honestly say I have never found a reference to or study done on either gazelle or oryx or camel manures in gardens. And they are sure not something many of us would have an personal experience with. :-) So I would assume the same guidelines would apply to using any of them that apply to using any herbivore manures in the garden - 1) actively composted for a minimum of 60-90 days before application or 2) if fresh applied no sooner than 120 days prior to harvesting 3) minimal direct contact with the edible produce such as low growing leafy greens etc. Compost forum discusses all this is more detail. While you wouldn't have to worry about the antibiotics and hormones issues found in some compost here you may need to take care due to the possibility of different, wild (vs. domestic) enteric pathogens. Comments (17)Truly Thanks you Kitchen Friends, Yes the wood floor is also under the pennisula. We use the pennisula every day, for everything you can fathom. If I did not have low windows in the breakfast area I would change it into one giant island with seating on one side. But, my DH and kids do not like the idea of changing breakfast area into a giant kitchen. And one day I will sell this house and perhaps a nook is good. DH wants to shorten pennisula, I am not sure. Still thinking about it. I am willing to change the angle and widen and then shorten. The reason he wants to shorten is it has been hectic around the pennisula because we use it daily. When someone is trying to cook, another trying to eat, or HW or whatever life gets crazy around the kitchen. I am thinking about an island. It would need to be one we sit at. Possibilities..... Thanks so much for your ideas. Photos are great too....See MoreFinished Kitchen - Feels good to be done!
Comments (19)Thanks, everyone. I've been busy in the kitchen today and it's so fun to have 'just the place' for everything. bluekit - I have been extremely happy with the Showplace cabinets. The cabinets were very accomodating in terms of using everything inch. They were able to customize wherever needed. That being said, I really needed to do my homework because the kitchen rep at the place that sold them was not a great help. My space is rather narrow so I didn't have a lot of design options, but maybe someone with more experience could have helped out a little more with that. Guess I'll never know. The end product is gorgeous, and there are tons of door options and stain colors to choose from. I was able to get samples quite easily. pfmastin - Try searching on tile medallion, mural, accent or decorative tile. I had a terrible time finding what I wanted above the range and spent hours searching. Seems the manufacturers call them different things. Good luck! laxsupermom - I didn't really think about the functionality of that little cabinet until it was done. It was a by-product of the corner cab and where the microwave needed to be (and ended up narrower than what I was expecting). But it has become quite the handy little cabinet. The top shelf holds our ramikins(sp?), the next shelf holds cake/cookie decorating supplies(infrequently used), the 3rd shelf has cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, salt and vanilla, and the lowest shelf has a few of my more frequent cooking spices and salt/pepper shakers. The only thing I may have done differently is to bring that cab and the one left of the microwave to the same depth as the cab over the microwave (15"). lynn2006 - I don't have other pix of the amendoim. I think you should just do it and trust me that you'll love it!! I enjoyed seing salmon-slayer's comment in his FK string about its longevity, based on his own experience. Happy New Year everyone!!...See MoreEmbothrium
