Help with odd wiring setup for Nest E thermostat

Cameron Roberson

I've got the Nest E with just the one R wire terminal. Upon opening my existing thermostat, I had both an Rc and Rh wire coming out of the wall going to each respective terminal.

I know this should mean I need to bump up to a third gen to get both R terminals, but I feel like my system is just not wired right. I live in Louisiana and don't have a furnace or a heat pump, just a combined central electric system with a gas hot water heater.

I feel like the electrician who wired this ran two wires from the same transformer or for some other reason, so I went up and took a photo of what the wires look like at the unit in the attic.

Does anyone know what's going on here? Do I actually have a dual transformer system? Or is this just a wonky setup I can get around?

Here's photos of everything:
