Pollination (Title must have 15 characters??? Really?)

How are you fruit trees doing? My Montmorency has very few cherries - it was full of blooms though. And my apple trees (2) have maybe 20 apples between them. So disappointing. We didn't have a freeze or anything. There are so few bees here. I have seen three bumble bees and two honey bees so far this season. No butterflies at all.

The titles are searchable and help many forum visitors to research specific topics. Historically, when people type in their topics, the title is the weakest point and the least descriptive. So insisting on 15 characters is reasonable.

A better title here would be "Cherry and apple pollination".

So this is new. I haven't started a thread since the change.

I was wondering, in general, how pollination is going for others, in different areas. It could be anything - plums, pears, apricots. Just wondering if this just my area. To help me determine if trees are being cut (not sour cherry, obviously) but the apple and there aren't enough trees to help pollinate mine? Is it the bees? Just a weird year?

Most of us over the age of 65 have never had to worry about what we served when entertaining except for shellfish - perhaps a severe peanut allergy but I only know one man with this. He simply never eats anything prepared in anyone's home as he knows they probably have used peanuts or peanut butter in their mixing bowls/skillets. I usually just dealt with the shellfish by never serving it unless I absolutely knew my friends ate it. But when we were younger and had and went to lots of dinner parties, no one was on any "special diet" - no gluten-free (not sure anyone had even heard of gluten outside a home ec class!), no paleo, no Mediterranean, no vegans or vegetarian. When I was married 40 years ago, my matron of honor did not eat red meat at the rehearsal dinner, but she found plenty of other things on her plate and did not go hungry. I think she was the first person I knew who didn't eat red meat. If one has never learned to cook for such diets, it's pretty hard to learn, especially when entertaining. I never serve a recipe I have not prepared multiple times before. At my age, just preparing a meal for others is not easy and trying to figure out what is "allowed" is frankly just more than I am up to doing. I wonder how we all survived all those dinner parties in the past. Have people's bodies really changed that much? I don't remember anyone ever becoming ill and we all knew one another pretty wells.

I may be confused (it happens), but this is what I posted under Dick's header on the subject. It may actually be what you were asking about. So sorry for the repeat if I'm babbling on: I don't know what your soil chemistry is, but around here one of the better natural fertilizers is Cotton Burr Compost, which you can also use as a mulch (which I do). It is more pricey then pine bark mulch but adds nutrients to the soil instead of depleting them. A lot of people were using mushroom compost, but the product they sell has already had the nutrients leached out of it by the companies who were growing mushrooms in it. It may sound good, but isn't as good as Cotton Burr Compost.....Just a suggestion to start with.............Maryl - (see link below) Re: Cotton Burr Compost

I'm sure her response was horrid and it's always a surprise when someone we know well goes all-out "internet ranter". I have a relative that does this too. I thought I read from your post that she stopped engaging with you - assumed it was only on FB since we're all shut in. That's why I suggested the mute function rather than blocking someone. I have a few IRL friends who's opinions differ greatly and we sometimes clash. And there was one person with with I was familiar, but not close friends. When they moved, we became friends on FB and I learned that this wasn't someone I wanted to be associated with (weird rants, inappropriate content etc). Since we weren't friends, there was no motivation for me to save any kind of relationship at all. I have some people blocked for various reasons, but there are a couple I have muted because I need a break. In one case, it's a dog page that I got sick of the volume of posts and wanted to see other stuff for a while. The mute function means you're still connected, but you don't see anything from them on your feed for 30 days. Not trying to invalidate your feelings at all.

I am in SE WI. My tart cherries have a very lite crop this year. Peaches and apples seem just fine however-so many that I have to get out and finish thinning them. Pear crop is horrible this year. One pear had few blooms on it this spring despite it being an old tree. The other pear (Bartlett) had less flowers too but the crop is way down since it had insufficient cross pollination this year. I guess I am happy for the lite Bartlett pear crop as I expected nothing when I saw how few the flowers were on my old Summercrisp pear.

I knew I have seen less pollinators and wish I would have manually pollinated my apple trees. I hope I remember for next year. My trees are only a few years old so I am not familiar with cycles yet. Hopefully all that has pollinated with your trees they fully mature. I question if mine will as I have quite a few apples drop in the past.

Various things can affect pollination......not just the availability or presence of active pollinators :-) Late winter/spring freezes when the blossom buds are forming is one of the most common. Some trees are alternate year bearers as well. Lack of suitable choices for cross pollination is another factor.

If local pollinators are not apparent when your trees are blooming (and all other factors are considered), then look into orchard mason bees. These are very early appearing pollinators, typically active well before honey and bumble bees are on the scene and are extremely docile and easy to raise in home gardens.
