Ilene, that's very close to the recipe I use. Mine uses 1 cup brown sugar + 1 cup white sugar in place of 2 cups white. This is a very good cake! 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 cup butter; softened 2/3 cup cocoa 1 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 cup boiling strong coffee 3 cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons soda Preheat oven to 325°. Grease two 8-inch cake pans and dust with cocoa. *I like to grease pans and place parchment paper on the bottom only and grease again, then dust with cocoa just as insurance that my cake will release easily from pan. With an electric mixer, blend sugars, eggs and butter until light and smooth. Blend in cocoa, buttermilk, vanilla and coffee, mixing after each addition. Combine flour, salt and soda and beat into cake batter just until combined. Pour into prepared pans and bake 40 to 45 minutes until cake test done; wood pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on rack 20 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely. Frost as desired. Cake freezes well and it's easy to make half recipe. Marilyn

Way to go! I love chocolate cake - it's my favorite! I think it's more fun to make things from scratch. The boxes save time, but when you have time, why not make from scratch? That way, at least, you know what's going into it. Sally

An update on my chocolate cake and chocolate frosting. I used the Ghiradelli Double chocolate cake mix and the same brand for the icing. I added an extra egg, butter instead of oil and milk instead of water. Thanks Tina and Mtn! The cake turned out amazing and my friend loved it. I actually thought it was delicious as well (given I am not a big fan of chocolate). I have never made chocolate frosting before. I used loads of butter, half and half, cocoa powder and confectioner's sugar and vanilla extract. It turned out perfectly. My friend loved the cake and took it home. I would share a photo but it wasn't a pretty cake. I did a bit of decorating in the limited time I had (and I live in a small apartment) and made her wear this banner which she loved. We drank champagne and played some silly games and we had a blast. It is so wonderful when you and your best friend get together and it feels like you had a huge party!
