Plumeria shopping in Hawaii
Comments (38)I bought from Mr Nishikata at the Aloha swap meet and his prices are very low (on average $5 a cutting, and they are larger than what you get pre-packaged at the Dole Plantation, which are $15 for a 12" cutting on average). However he may not know all the names of his cuttings. I just want to mention something to you: It sounds like an awful lot of cuttings you're planning to bring back. If you like some of the more common varieties (like Candy Stripe, Smith's Candy Apple, Celadine etc...) I just recently discovered that you can get really good deals right here in southern Calif! This weekend I just attended the SCPS meeting in Huntington Beach, and got a large 2 feet long with 3 tips Candy Stripe cutting for $10. Good luck plumeria hunting!...See MoreJungle Jack plumeria plants found in Oklahoma
Comments (58)I've been good Mike, how are you? My plants are doing ok, i suppose. Marjorie, is still the only plumeria blooming. I expected to have something on Penang Peach by now. My brug leaves aren't liking the heat so much, but they are all still blooming. I've got a noid brug that is putting out another flush of about 20, in this heat! Yea, I didn't really see anything that wowed me at home depot, but i thought maybe someone else would. I don't have much overwintering space, so anything that i buy has to be special. I'm really tempted to try and find one of the JJ Thai Jades that Kenny had the picture of. I'm trying to resist the urge, just not very successfully....See MorePlumeria Newbie help and questions...
Comments (13)Hi puglvr. Here's a pic of mine last year - flowers are at about 5' Underneath the clay pot there are bricks holding it off the ground so that water can freely flow out of the pots drain hole. That, combined with the gritty mix has been fine for not being too wet. Cold protection - well probably need some, but they are tougher than I initially thought. Since it weighs probably 80lb, no way I can move it for freezes! The spot is fully under the canopy of an oak, which I've found gives about 10 degrees of frost protection, and being right up against the house helps too. This past winter I didn't protect at all, and it did great. The previous year it was small enough I could use a towel as a frost cloth. Of course these past two winters have been mild, so I expect it would take damage in bad winters, even in this sheltered spot. This spot gets dapples shade until the sun sinks low enough to get under the oaks canopy. It is a west exposure, so full sun from maybe 4pm on. Based on the way it is growing toward the light, I'd say it would like more sun than that. But I don't have a better spot for it. The spot you have sounds like it will work well. I rooted this one without knowing much about plumerias, so just did what I always do with cuttings - stick them in some soil, put in a shady spot that gets sprinkler water and mostly ignore it. I don't really recall how long it took to root. But I got it in December, so I didn't really expect it to do anything until it got warm. So someone else will have to advise on how long it should take and watering frequency. But just from looking - yours look great. No sign of stress in the leaves. Now that I'm learning more, I can see that my noid is a large grower. This year it looks pretty gangly, not sure what to do with it. But now that I know that miniatures exist, I think the answer for me might be to trade it for a smaller growing variety. More blooms on a small plant would be wonderful - my favorite thing about them is the fragrance!...See MoreAugust pics of Plumerias in VB
Comments (53)Hello Everyone, Jo, i checked on where i purchased my Mangos..It was from Pine Island Nursery in Florida. If you were asking about where to purchase some Plumeria, I would suggest Florida Colors, Jungle Jacks and Maui Plumeria Gardens. If you wnat to but some cuttings, you can always try ebay...be careful though, i was just recently burned there. You can find some reputable sellers like one stop Aloha...i would trust them. Thank you for bringing back this thread!!! Made my day to see the change in my trees since last year!!! LE, Thank you for the nice comments...welcome to the forum!!! Artic, Seriously? You have the best ability to grow anything!!! Living in Utah, with the snow capped mountains in the background and growing Palm trees and Plumeria there? I am always in awe at what you have done and what you have growing in your area. If only the people here on this forum could see some of your pictures of your palms...They wouldnt believe it. Please for some of my Plumie friends who dont get to see what we Palm freaks see on that forum...post a few pics of your Windmill with the snow capped mountains behind...you know the pic that im talking about...its beautiful!!! As far as your Plumies, you have blooms all year ... Im glad to hear that you have some that are blooming well!! Nice to see you over hear on the Plumie side!!! Barbra, Jen is correct in that i would value those red veined seedlings. Also the red leafed seedlings.. That to me is a good indication that you will have a dark red blooming Plumeria or something deeper than the usual yellow, white ot even pink. When i see the seedlings like that that have red leaves, veining..they are keepers. I did give one of my red veined seedlings to Hunter. He is a young 13 year old who loves Plumeria and Palmtrees..How could i not share one with him!!! : ) Hunter, if you are reading this post...i would love to know how your tree is doing? Remember, it is in the Gritty Mix and likes to be watered more than in the normal soil. That mix is very fast draining. Jen, How is everything? Any rain? Thanks for helping Barbra with her questions!!! You are so nice to help with all of the questions. I have been very busy with work and it has been crazy with the weather, delays etc. Ugggg! Thanks again for everything. I need to take some pics of the new babies and show them to you!!! They are all doing well. I did feel the velvet skin on the Maverick. Felt just like the ET Lenon Drop. That was really interesting... Take care everyone, Laura in VB...See More- 5 years agoJeannies_Garden (Tx 9a) thanked Kawagoe(Home of SF 49ers Santa Clara CA)
