back when it all began...
Comments (28)I remember my dad coming home from work every evening in the summer, eating dinner and then going out to the big vegetable garden in the back yard and working until almost dark. I remember tomato and pepper seedlings on all the windowsills in spring, and the squash vines growing waaaay out of the garden onto the lawn in the summer. I remember string tied to the tall bird feeder post and scarlet runner beans growing up the strings. I also remember staring at huge salads and mounds of vegetables at dinner, knowing I had to choke it all down before I could leave the table. No salad dressing for the salad or spices for the veggies - that wasn't 'healthy'. Everything tasted either just green, or green and bitter. Bletch. At least I could feed the coleslaw to the cat when my parents weren't looking. However, gardening was in the blood, and there was no escaping my destiny. :o) So, since I had issues with vegetables, I grew flowers. At first, when I was still living with my parents, I grew the easy flowers such as cosmos, zinnias and cleome. Then, soon after I got married and moved to my own house, I came across a Fine Gardening magazine issue that changed my life. The front of the magazine had pictures of roses that were unlike any I'd ever seen in real life... They resembled those big blowsy peony-type roses that you would see in old dutch paintings. They were a completely different species from the hybrid teas I knew. They were called hybrid musk roses, and I was in love. Fast forward a few years and almost a hundred roses later. I discovered gardenweb.com, and started seeing posts in the roses forums about a hideous disease called Rose Rosette Disease. I started researching flowers that I could use in place of roses in case mine got the disease and had to be destroyed. I haven't found a replacement for roses yet, but I did discover many types of flowers that I'd never seen in any of the catalogs I receive. I can't afford to buy many plants, but I can afford seeds, so that's how I got most of my new flowers in the last couple years. Recently, I've come full circle and started growing (some) vegetables. I started this past summer with some tomatoes and cantaloupe. Of course, this was the worst year in decades to grow tomatoes, but I still managed to get a few before the tomato plants died of blight, or drowning, or something. DH really loved the tomatoes, so I will build a raised bed this winter and grow them properly (meaning, farther apart than 6 inches) next year. Even if DH didn't love them, I'd be tempted to grow tomatoes just for the funny names some of them have. Someday, maybe I'll learn to cook vegetables that actually taste good. I imagine it requires a lot of butter. Oh, and I would describe myself as a "collector" gardener and not a "designer" gardener. I keep seeing flowers that I MUST have, but I don't have a clear idea of where to plant them. I admire beautiful gardens that have 'drifts of color', but I've never been able to achieve that. Comments (150)Oh, it's "Bad Impressions" night on the MNF forum!! LoL YAY!! :O) Well, first things first....My Boss's husband is Ok, the guy he hit is OK, just a broken ankle. The pedestrian was drunk, and ran out between 2 cars, and hit the side of his car. So now the ped. is in the tank, charged with public intoxication & playing illegal touch tag with moving vehicles. Or something to that effect. :O) So thanks for all the prayers. They've helped. My boss's husband's brother was killed in a hit and run 5 years ago, so that's why he was so shook up last night & not thinking straight. Just brought back so many horrible memories. Can't blame him a bit, honestly. That WOULD be a pretty horrible experience. Yikes. Okay....Now for the fun part. :O) Becki, Medo & Tracy..I am laughing my tail off, thinking of you perty young girls charming the pants off of those fellers!! :O) Oh My!! LOL!! *evil grin* Well, I can tease...yes I can. Because, after all...I HAVE given the mailman a few peeks, haven't I?!? I'd much rather be caught stinky & dirty...than nakie & wet!! LoL Wooo-Weeee!!!! Oh, that reminds me! I could just KICK my husband. He's done the same thing yours has, Tracy! (last week!) He told his buddy that he could borrow a tool, and "just pick it up at the house on your way through". (!) Oooookay. WITHOUT telling me!! Soooooo, wouldn't ya know it, right as I got out of the shower, I heard someone stick their head in the back door and say "helllooooooooo!!" YIPES!! So I wrap my hair up, put on hubby's shirt...and go see who is invaiding my house. To make matters worse, he couldn't find the tool, it's not where hubby said it'd be...so I have to help him search for it!! OMG!! Meanwhile, he's laughing behind my back. Geeze. AND this is the same buddy that knows about the SEARS/VACUUM episode!!! UGH!!!! *blush* But ya know what, ladies?? WE ARE BEAUTIFUL & SEXY no matter WHAT we smell like or are wearing!! AMEN??!!!! And we can reassure our selves with the fact that...One of these days....Our men WILL get their comupance. Oh yes. :O)...See MoreWhat makes YOU happy today?
Comments (69)Haven't read this post yet, glad I did...It makes ME happy! Other things for today, second day of waking up pain free and basking in the wonderfully funny dreams I'd had. DH actually left the seat down in the master bath. Going to bake banana bread, baked ziti, and a whole host of things so we've got them packed nicely in the freezer. I'm SUPER busy at work and need to be able to have dinner ready to go when I get home two hours later than usual... Anticipating my visit with DS tomorrow morning, then an afternoon spent scrapbooking with a good friend. The fur-kids. Granddog Ruphus spent the night and he & Aurora do not have off buttons. Seeing them frolic, with the others joining in (even the cats) is so much fun....See MoreSS Support Mon., Nov. 5th through Sun.,Nov. 11th
Comments (34)Maddie~ Forget about the rant...nhsuzaane is right..We ALL have had rants here. It helps just to type away and press "post"--very theraputic. Plus, let yourself enjoy the support. And now, I'm going to have a little rant of my own... Maddie, On the job...I have no doubt you like (maybe even love) your job, but there is way too much "job" and not enough of you. Start looking for another position. Even if the auditors find you need more manpower, the company still has to find the funds and get the authorization for it; that could take a long, long time. Right now, it's not a priority for them to help you even learn your job...why would they be motivated to get help for any time soon? Start job hunting now. And BTW, you don't have to find a job at what you went to school for---find something you LIKE---what happened to your auctioning dreams? Or real estate? When we toured that KY mansion together, you really impressed me with your vision on property renovation! You would be a gem in the customer service end of a high-end real estate biz! And you know so much about the history of KY! And---you take on WAY too much in all of these jobs you've had. Take some time and find a job that fits YOU. Enough of this Super-Woman-Set-Me-Up-For-Failure-Cr@p. You are a very, very nice person, but you are taking on too much---because you're TOO nice! You do not have to save the company---just find a job, work as hard as you can, follow your job description, and save money for pleasure vacations and retirement, and BE YOURSELF! Maddie, everyone enjoys being around you. I loved every single minute I spent with you. Your humor, your easy smile, your warmth, and your perky red-headed personality should land you whatever job you want. Please ask yourself if what you're doing is really what you want to be doing...or is it just what you trained for and you don't want to "waste" that $ and education. Perhaps this is why you choose jobs that are so difficult. Do you really want to be doing what you're doig??? People change over time and maybe you should think about your OTHER talents and find a "fun" job to do for a while-one that take advantage of your PERKY personality, your persuasive manner, and natural good looks-instead of your brain! There is nothing wrong with *NOT* having a brainy job! Look at meeeeeeeeeeeeee! I CAN FLY! (and feel like Peter Pan half the time!) Sorry this is so long, but I really think you deserve to be happier. It makes me sad to think your employer doesn't appreciate you or give you the type of working experience you deserve. If the last person was miserable and now you're miserable, buy a paper at lunch and start LOOKING for a new job...try looking in the customer service ads...or real estate! Everyone here will write you a reference, I'm sure. Love you and want you to look forward to going to work! -Beege...See More- 8 years ago
