Honorine de Brabant For You, Olga
Comments (11)Yes, this year there was only Reine de Violettes, Rose de Rescht, and Belle de Crecy at my HD, too. The rest were ht's and a single austin, Mary Rose. Honorine did not have a single bloom last year. Nothing but growth, growth, growth. Olga said she likes to get big and to not expect blooms for 3 years. I was fully prepared not to get a rose this year. What a wonderful surprise. I believe it is supposed to repeat, but when you look at the number of buds it's hard to believe she'll repeat much this year....See MoreField Trip! Comments (30)Diane, I just measured my hand… that bloom on Over the Moon was over 6 inches in diameter! I finally looked on HMF to see Sally Homes. At the base of the plant were two name plates so I wasn’t sure. I think you’d really enjoy seeing this garden. And, of course, I’d like to see photos of your visit! Va Joh, I’m so sorry you’re sick!! That’s the worst. I love hearing about your childhood adventures in Washington Park and the “exercise stairs.” I hope you get well soon, get a chance to visit the rose gardens and that you're having a Happy Birthday!!! Dave, aren’t you the person that likes Eden? I was thinking about all Eden lovers on GW when I saw that display. There are several Eden’s at the gardens and they have to be 15-20’ tall. Here’s a photo with a person (that I don’t know) in it for scale. Happy 4th of July!...See MoreAwful scent of Duchesse de Brabant
Comments (33)I have her white sport Madame Joseph Schwartz in my garden. It smells very faint of citrus to me. The Duchess de Brabant at Descanso Gardens smells the same. I must be missing the olfactory gene that smells the other scent molecules of petroleum and Tupperware fragrance. This is a rose that barely has any scent at all to me, but the scent molecules that I do detect are pleasant. However, I have the tea Monsieur Tillier, and it is my second favorite fragrance (black tea, black pepper and bananas) of all my roses that also includes Crimson Glory (strong old rose), Lemon Spice (clove and old rose), Lady of Shallot (myrrh), Annie Laurie McDowell (faint old rose and violets) and Golden Celebration (myrrh and citrus, mixed with old rose sometimes). My favorite is Marie Pavie (wafting musk) and third favorite is Perle d’Or (wafting honey). Most roses in my garden don’t have much fragrance until I cut and bring them inside. Marie Pavie and Annie Laurie McDowell scent the entire yard but only on a warm day....See MorePortland International Rose Test Garden - Fall Visit
Comments (13)Liz PNW 8b I wish I have your warm temp. It's 40's during the day and 29 F at night in my zone 5a as of 10/18/22. In my heavy clay, grafted roses don't smell as good as own root. I grew both Pink Peace as grafted and own-root, same with Angel Face and Heirloom. However, once the grafted-rose grew its own-root above Dr.Huey-rootstock, it improved in scent. Like red Knock-out had zero scent in the 1st decade as grafted-on-Dr.Huey, but after a decade it had a nice scent, even my neighbor complimented on its nice scent. It grew its own-root and lost Dr.Huey-rootstock, buried deep in soaking wet clay. Two other people noted the same about own root has stronger scent: Khalid in zone 9b and Planetrj (zone 11b/H2 pH 5.8). My own root Pretty Lady rose was a perfume bottle regardless of weather. In hot temp, it was like raspberry Kool-aid, strong but artificial. In cold temp, it changed to carnation and rose. Very powerful scent on own root Pretty Lady rose below:...See Moreportlandmysteryrose
