I'm not sure how that idiotic designation came to be. But then, I've been an active member of GardenWeb since 1996, a very special time for great interactions and exchange of knowledge. My husband thinks that in the early days, there were as few as 50 members. "Spike" would show up at the get togethers upon occasion.
There were very, very few forums back then (5 or 6), all of them were horticulture related....trees, vegetables, pests, shrubs, annuals, etc. No pictures!! No cell phones or digital cameras to speak of. People had to verbally describe an insect they wanted an ID for, it was hilarious, sometimes, but lots of fun.
We had lots of regional get togethers then and a frequent exchange of phone calls, cards, and gifts. Oh, I 'met' my dearest husband in the Gardenweb! We've been married over 15 years.
In recent years, I've been an occasional contributor. I can see that dwindling down as it becomes more challenging to enjoy the experience.
Ive only been here since '99, if thats when HGTV went south, but didnt stick around. Came back when it was a pay site, didnt pay, then came back maybe in '02. Spike was here. I dont think i can remember not being able to post pics, but i dont have much of a memory anyway.
Cool that you met your husband here. I've only met 3 people from GW. Enjoy your fame! ;)
That Top Commenters section really annoys me, I just don't see the point. But I have to say it is nice to notice two of my favorites there today, rhizo and Joseph ;0) Good advice always from both.
Houzz has taken the idea from other forums without considering what a dumb, meaningless category it is.
Digital cameras became readily available quickly and GW made it possible to attach images. Boy, were they awful sometimes, lol. Quality improved rapidly, though.
