Comments (150)Ok, ok..I am givning in! I am on the prowl for either those birds or a couple of green singing finches. Jojo, you just made me realize how much I miss hearing the singing of birds in my home.lol It made winetr go by so much better than the dead silience in my home. I think I know who named those birds..lol. Such cute names that only a kid or two can come up with. I would love for you to raise them along side of us, all the way to the brood, hatchlings, and babies. I would love that Jojo since I have a thing for birds. Comments (19)Wow! Everybody and his brother is having a party on Saturday! Do you have enough parking? Do you know some responsible young adults who will shag cars for you, or do the human spot filler? I hope you're lucky and the neighbors aren't having parties too. Or maybe you're lucky and have permits? Definitely precook the meats so you have a lot less to worry about with getting them fully cooked. It's also good to saute the harder vegetables ahead. I just had a smaller pizza party, and it was going to be a build your own kind of situation, but I think there were too many toppings and not enough elbow room, and I ended up making them according to people's druthers. If you're going to have them help, try to have a whole clear table for them, and another table for the ingredients, where they can just pick up the bowls and put them back. I also learned that there are drawbacks to letting the guests choose whether to put ingredients on the pizzas or in their salads. I did that because some of my guests were picky about salad, but I think a tossed green salad with a light vinaigrette and not too many other ingredients would be better. They can still use toppings on their salads if they think of it, but the base is complete. Putting drinks in the cooler(s) sounds like a good idea, not only for the space in the fridge, but also so you can put your drinks station where you want it, rather than where you want to be working. Comments (18)Canned goods were invented for those situations. Today we have the luxury of lighter weight plastic and foil pouches. I see tunafish, oysters, even cooked hamburger in foil pouches. Nuts, dried fruit, dried meat (jerky) you probably already thought of. Potatoes wrap in foil and will cook nice in the coals of a campfire. Dry beans don't weigh much... bean soup cooks fine over a campfire. Traditional travel foods were often pickled, salted, or dried. Ziplock baggie of green olives? A whole fishing pole is not needed... some line and a couple hooks and some lead shot sinkers? Bait is found under rotten logs and layers of leaves. People were spearing fish for thousands of years before line fishing was invented... pin it to the bottom then reach down with your hand to grab it.... does take some practice as light refraction makes the fish somewhere other then where you see it. Pour salt on that leech and it will let go... btw it will make fish bait. When I was young went camping up in the artic circle with not much more then beer and pancake batter... ate fresh caught fish until I was sick of them. The variety of the modern world is such a luxury! Being familiar with edible berries and plants can help give variation... one decent puffball mushroom can change a meal for the whole group. A half handful of wild raspberries flavors a pot of oatmeal. Know what you are eating... all puffballs are edible but that toadstool might give you a trip of another kind. Salt! Don't forget salt... potatoes, beans, and oatmeal are all better with a pinch of salt in the pot. Dried hot peppers are nice because they take little space and pack a huge flavor... black beans and cayenne peppers! So the bannana or apple got mushed... cut it up into the oatmeal in the morning. Part of the adventure is making do and being creative. Dump corn bread batter in the bottom of the cooking pot and set it over the fire... bread!.. got a jalpeno in it and it is good bread. It does not have to slice nice... scoop it out with a spoon and eat it in chunks. Comments (30)Many times I don't come up with the right tone in voice/writing to express myself, and I can be easily misunderstood. I always need an editor, and I have lots here! Thank you all so much for "editing" the wording/potential interpretation. It helped enormously! DH was estranged from his kids for quite a few years, and all three of them suddenly mellowed a couple of years ago. They established a good, stable relationship and I want to continue that. Especially after the kids lost both their parents in 14 months, so I'm kinda sorta all they have left - scary thought :-) So, if they want to camp out, fine. They now know the rules (they absolutely, positively know what behavior their father would accept and what he would go ballistic about). They agreed that they are responsible for "their" guests. If it turns into mayhem and chaos, I have a stash of wine in the basement, I will sit with a glass in my hand, eat popcorn, and watch them clean it up, fix it up, or pay for it. I'm really looking forward to this celebration, and I'm not stressing at all anymore. Probably because I am the best (or is it the worst?) procrastinator in the ENTIRE universe, and I've started working on this early enough to think through the process.
