Exterior Porches & Decks Design Dilemma

Shutter color and porch decor help needed!

I am looking for suggestions on colors to paint my front door and shutters. I am thinking black or Navy (I painted the door navy already) but am having trouble pulling the trigger on the shutters without seeing an example picture of a butter yellow home with red brick and navy shutters.

I'm also interested in suggestions on what to do with the porch decor. Right now there is literally nothing on the porch and it is beyond boring. Benches? Planters? etc? Not looking to do any structural updates at the time so decor will have to do for now.

Also, please no landscape suggestion as that is next on the list and the half moon bed in front of the door is currently being seeded with grass.

Red and butter yellow…I would be doing a blue/black, not navy for your shutters and front door….

for the decor- there is not much room so I would invest in a new door mat and install larger porch lights.

What a fantastic space you have. Great windows and your fireplace is such a cool unique feature. I think the idea of using your fireplace ledge for you TV is genius. Every seat in the place could view the TV better if it was there also. Do you like that idea? But you MUST be able to hide your cords! You would then have the space available where the other TV stand was for an end table and another lamp. Not quite sure of your style so I'm fishing. Simple drapes to match the ones in your reading room which, by the way, looks really nice. The rug and sofa couldn't be more perfect together. I'd say move your floor lamp closer to the sofa so you could actually read......add a couple larger plants. Tree size.

Are you sure that is metal? It looks like it could possibly be wood and if so that would be an easy build. Even if your inspiration photo is metal you could still have them built out of wood and stained.

Hi! have you thought about adding a pergola or a covered area of some kind? I don't know if you like to eat outside, but that may be a place for a dining table or firepit. adding a gravel or concrete area around a fire pit would give the area purpose. Add a circular or square retaining wall around it to define the space. you can fill in with plants, small bushes, your favorite flowers, etc. If you are tired of looking at the side of your house, add a modern slat trellis for flowering vines to grow on. you can wrap this around one side of the firepit for privacy as well. Maybe you could incorporate your paddles into the benches around the fire pit as seat backs? either screw them vertically with the wide part up or sideways. I thought the second photo was a really pretty array of what colors you can add to your yard.

I pulled up this photo. The brick is a little darker but similar to yours, I thought. I like the idea of a green for your shutters and I wondered about painting both door and trim a dark color, maybe a dark purplish almost black. I think the column could be pulled from your chart, a warmer tone than your current white - maybe Swiss Coffee. Think about whether you'd like that same color for your railing and maybe a dark brown from your brick for the treads and risers. Here's a screenshot of some greens that might work. Black door and shutters two big black planters on either side of the door on the stoopand IMO you have too much grass already none of which looks very healthy. I always like to see a wakway to the front door from the street it also allows for some nice plantings along it

Agree that black would be a much better color for your shutters and front door. Having a walkway coming to the front door from the front, as Patricia mentions, is a great way to open up your front to make it much more welcoming than the semi circle planting space you have now.

^The wide front walkway opens up the entire front of the house and makes it much more appealing/welcoming IMO.

You can have the skinny walkway you have now as an entrance from the driveway, but adding that new walkway will amp up your curb appeal tremendously.

Bigger project, more money, but I would widen the steps to match the porch width and add wrought iron railings. If you have a huge budget, take a brick walkway to the street. That would bring a much more elegant and established look to the home.
