Comments (4)jlaak5: On the topic of Soybean Meal I found a couple of photos of Soybean Meal for lawn online. I will be darned if I can find any retailers though. We live in a small community and I checked all the logical places including the feed store. I don't mind a bit buying it online. Can you or someone else suggest a source online for me? Thank you. Comments (3)One way to find out if it's Floratam is by looking at the stolons (runner) which should be thick purple reddish color. Raleigh has thinner green stolons. I would be surprised if the builder even put Floratam down. Raleigh variety is the most commonly used but it isn't that great. Floratam is much tougher. From now on, do not used feed and weed. It does not work. Use pre-emergent weed control such as Lesco 0-0-7 pre em that you can get at Home Depot. Do that every Oct 1 and Feb 1st. Go with Lesco 15-5-10 as your last fertilizer of the year (October) and rest of year Lesco 24-0-11. Home Depot sells them. Fertilize with Lesco 24-0-11 next month to speed up growth from grass that's still alive. FOLLOW THE DIRECTION on how much to put down. Also, mow high. 3 inches minimum. I mow mine at 4 to conserve water in the ground. Water deeply and infrequently. Water only if the grass starts to wilt. It could be anytime. The amount of water to put down is 1 inch. That's 600 gallons of water per 1000 sqft to saturate 6-8 inches of ground. Use tuna cans that's 1 inch deep to find out how long it takes to fill up the tuna can. Do what I suggested and you should have decent lawn by end of summer....See MoreWeed-n-feed and round uped stuff in the compost
Comments (9)It's important to distinguish between detectable amounts and levels sufficient to damage plants. The former is a potential environmental problem in a wider sense. The latter is the topic that the OP is concerned about. As far as the WHO, they have labeled glyphosate as a 'probable' carcinogen, which in US (EPA) terms is a step short of 'carcinogen.' This occurred a couple months ago and it's not yet clear (to me anyway) what that was based on. Multiple studies have to be done and evaluated over a period of years to get a clear picture, and toxicologists don't always agree even if they're looking at the same data. Unfortunately this all takes a long time. This is why I minimize my use of potentially toxic chemicals: there is much that we are still finding out....See MoreDid rain wash away my weed-n-feed?
Comments (35)Are you planning to spray the whole yard with atrazine, or just spot spray? I would spot spray each & every suspected Crabgrass head, but I would not broadcast a spray across the entire yard--That's a bit wasteful & atrazine is tough stuff. It's really not too late on the preM this year, all this rain & cool weather has kept them behind schedule in my yard. The atrazine should be used in combination with a good preM to keep the heads from coming back anyway. I use dimension & it actually kills baby Crabgrass up to a single tiller, so it can be applied later than the others on the market. Late app plus late growth means you're not too late for preM & it will make a world of difference. I also recommend a product called bonide Sedge ender, which targets Crabgrass & nutsedge specifically, including a preM already mixed in. Ace has both these products, but the big box stores usually only carry fast acting stuff to keep you coming back....See MoreEmbothrium
