You can order online from Lands End and return it at Sears. They often have a % off special (now 25% off full price items) or free shipping. They also have a very liberal return policy.

My favorite is a plain gray Burton's hoodie. I like that burton hoodies tend to be a bit longer. A bit pricey but well made and bombproof.

I like Macy's Style and Company. Look under jackets though. They make a really lightweight one., great for when you need a little something. I have it in black and also white. Looks like they now have a light gray.

For a heavier hoodie, try Gap or Old Navy. I have one I bought last year from Gap that is not banded at the bottom and is a more relaxed fit. I bought two heavier ones from Old Navy, traditional, one is a dusty pink/mauve and one in gray.

I have an American Giant sweatshirt (didn’t want the hood). After reading the reviews I ordered up a size and they run really snug and small. It is designed for those long lean 20-somethings. I kept it and occasionally wear it but not often as it is stiffer and not soft and comfy.

Spent time about 18 months looking for the perfect PLAIN hoodie for my daughter's SO. Bought a few and we reviewed them. The best (length of arms was a thing since he is tall and slim) for him was from Converse. The logo was sewn on and I got it off. (This is a plain one - Converse is owned by Nike)

I just figured out what French terry is. Sorta like a towel on one side. I want the kind of sweatshirt material that's soft and fleecy on the inside.

I went to Walmart today. I was told by a very curt senior saleswoman that spring isn't the right season and I need to come back in the fall. Um no, not going back to Walmart.

Well unfortunately "Miss Walmart" was correct, there aren't any this time of year at Wally World.

What about a sporting goods store or a Ranch Store? I bet there are a bunch at Goodwill and other thrift shops.

I love my American Giant. I have a men's medium. I'm also a size 4-6. The arms and shoulders are nice and roomy. Mine is probably 2 years old but it doesn't look like the style/sizing has changed.

Catty, what about arm length in the men's medium? How tall are you? I'm 5'4".

I'm just below 5'3" and they are about a hand-length too long, which is perfect for pushing up, to me. I will measure when I get home from work.

So, I just received the Hanes basic hoodie in ebony. I got a large, even though I'm small. For $13, it's fine. It's a lighter weight fleece, not premium quality, but it's not raggedy like so many of my old hoodies. Next time I'd get a medium. It's fine, but the quest will continue.

Linelle, I forgot about measuring the arms of my hoodie. When I remembered, I could not find it. I might have taken it to the NH for dad back when it was still cool.

I *just* got an American Giant women's XL. Not as roomy as I expected (of course it being nearly 80 makes it tricky find comfort). (I usually wear M in tees.

How does the XL fit? All the pics on the American Giant website make it look slim through the middle. It's not that I'm big through the middle, but I like layering and I like the outer layer to have a little room.

How's the sleeve length? Are you tall?

Old Navy is usually my go to for cute, reasonable priced hoodies. This one comes in several colors and has good reviews. Hoodies will be easy to find around the first of August for school shopping....we older gals can find them then :).

I just want to say that the Hanes hoodie is kinda meh. Its a little shapeless. While it's true I got a Large and should have gotten a Medium, its low price shows. Nevertheless, it will be okay and at least the sleeve cuffs aren't frayed.

I totally forgot that I have a fairly new Eddie Bauer light gray hoodie. I grabbed it out of the closet to wear on our road trip because I get chilly in he car & we are headed to the NW/Glacier anyway & I figure I will need another layer. It is part of their First Ascent line. It’s kinda fleecy in the inside and smooth knit on the outside. Holds up very well to washing and a low dryer setting. The sleeves are roomy and they have thumb holes. And zip pockets! I really like it. I have no idea if they still carry it but I bought it in either late winter or early spring.

Thanks Outside. What’s the deal with thumb holes? I can imagine certain situations where I might use them but how do the cuffs look when you don’t have a thumb in the hole?

I was at Old Navy this morning and they did indeed have fleece hoodies for women. I bought a hoodie made of thin tee shirt type fabric while I was there. I saw them on line this morning after I looked at the link above and made a bee line there first thing! I love those ultra thin hoodies, they are just the thing when it's too cold for a tee shirt but not cold enough for a real jacket....I also always take one to a restaurant in case it's freezing in there!

I have long arms so I just push them up or roll them back if I’m not using them. In winter I have running tops with them and I use to keep my hands warmer. I put on my gloves, then put the sleeves over the gloves and my thumb in the hole. It keeps the sleeve over the glove to make more of a seal. It actually helps keep my hands warmer.

On this jacket the holes are on the inside edge and you can barely see them. Nice job of construction imo.

Medium is nice and roomy but not too huge. I almost bought a couple there, but they were $30 with 20% in the store and online they are $25 with 40% off. Well duh. Even if I pay the nominal shipping I'll come out ahead and if anything goes wrong I can return them to the store.

I like the gray. The blue isn't quite navy enough for me. The red is different, but I think I'll get one of those too. Much nicer than the Hanes.

Yes Cindy, the one I linked is a thin lightweight jacket made of a tee shirt type material. So yeah, it's thin.

Measured my new American Giant. (Selected this as it made in the USA, all cotton (USA loomed), pre-washed, lined hood.) This one is heavy weight. The back of the arms is double layered - to provide a preemptive elbow patch.

(Note: tired of writing 'arm pit' so switched to 'arm scythe'.)

Just to extrapolate a bit here. I'm pretty sure a W XL is more than I need. I just measured my all-time favorite (but beginning to shred) Nike hoodie. It's 37-38" @ the hem. Can we safely assume that's the hips measurement? So hmmm, I'm pretty sure I'd be a S with possibly a size up to M for roominess.

Where I live, a heavyweight hoodie will keep me warm on most winter days.

AG says if the hips are 43/44, get the XL. Which has a hem diameter of one to two inches less. So that could be a S, unless one wants more room. Free returns. They have some stores (didn't look how many).

My son saw the box from them and immediately tried it on. And he said, gee, I've always wanted one. He was truly wistful. Silly boy ---- he's over 30, makes a really good salary, and we give him $$ for Christmas and Birthday. (I raised frugal kids I've found.) IF I got it for him, I'd be pestering him about color and size. I'll just offer to take care of returning it if the fit is off for him.

Oh, forgot to mention, the AG logo is pretty small. A sewn on tag at the hem (easy to remove).

I don't mind small logos, like the subtle Nike swoosh on mine. I don't want big words.

I wore my Hanes today. It'll do, but it's not super substantial. The Old Navy hoodies are due today.

You know, even if I get the wrong size of AG, it will give me what I need to know to size up/down.

Guys, where can I find such a basic-looking hoodie? I would really like a grey one like in the original post. I have seen some hoodies that look the same way in a local store, but their quality is terrible! I want to buy a couple of them, but I also want them to be good quality. It has been a while since I have last found some hoodies that I would like. I also like the short-sleeved hoodies. I buy them only according after reading some reviews of the best short sleeved hoodies. Recently I got bought a couple, they are incredible!
