Pee Wee blooms start popping up

The highest point is hitting almost 5 ft now. Yay dwarf. :D

The glory just one time in a year... but I like its leaves and brown bark in the winter... so I'm okay it doesn't rebloom.

I love this time of the year! :D

Very nice. Definitely enjoy this time. But leave a little enjoyment for when the leaves turn red/purple/orange ish too.

Mine tends to grow sideways and is only 2' high. Works for me as it is under a large holly. My blooms have been open for quite a while so they are now turning green/lime.

Sounds like yours is getting more shade than mine, Luis... mine is actually in an almost full-sun location (depending on the time of the year it may be real full-sun). After I planted it several years ago I wondered if it might be a wrong spot. But the girl (think it's a she) doesn't seem to care, just eating sunlight and growing large. But it probably works okay because of where I live. I suspect your Pee Wee might melt in the scorching sun in Texas!

Yes, definitely, fall brings another enjoyable thing with this hydrangea. Already looking forward to it. :-)

Honestly I don't think PeeWee will work if such forgiving shrub as Fothergilla didn't make it there. In a very similar situation I have a semi-dwarf viburnum 'Shoshoni' and weeping cornus kousa 'Elizabeth Lustgaarten'. Both were strugling at the beginning, but starting from year #3 become self-sufficient. Obviously, both of them are much larger than PeeWee, but still could be kept at 5x5. Another possible candidate for the place could be any of H.paniculata since they have more stronger (wider and deeper) root system than any other hydrangeas and tolerates a lot of sun. Though, all being well, they'll be larger than 5x5, but with some creative pruning could be kept at a little bit smaller size if desired. Also, butterfly bush could tolerate dry conditions and maple roots competition once established.

WOW Pee Wee looks wonderful - I lost mine just after I was able to save him from a disastrous center breakage from a Winter of 36" snow piled up on him. He was so alive & put out beautiful clusters ~ it was his second season ~ sigh! It wasn't the breakage that caused his demise, he mended well. It was the wet feet from the down spout - as he was at the bottom of a slope ~ Oakleaf Hs hate wet feet! My Alice is indeed getting huge (planted in '07) My Snow Queen is staying manageable as far as spread but perhaps will be tall. She was a victim of bunny muncher as a 1 gal planted in '08. Now just 3 ft tall & has tons of new branches at the base & known for more up-right growth habit than Alice. I think you'll be happy w/ Pee Wee!

I just wish I knew what could have caused the little guy's sudden death ... he never revived from coma ... I couldn't resuscitate ... soil was too wet to apply emergency sugar Rx. I'll leave him be for a while more, before pulling up, to see if it was a *Vole-attack* rather than *wet-feet* (he was planted at the bottom of a slope). Cousins SQ & Alice are in great shape, both less blooms but growing well.

Ditas - I don't protect my mature oakleafs. They are planted in an area where they are protected from winds from the north but do catch some wind from the west. They do bloom for me, though perhaps not as much as they would were they protected. But I hate how wrapped up plants look in winter, I'm kind of lazy, and they're too big at this point in time anyway. I will protect the PeeWees though, because, as I mentioned in another post, they are planted right next to the driveway and I'm afraid those brittle branches will snap off if they get hit with the snow blower output. They are short bushes though, much less of an eyesore putting protection over those than the big ol' now Queens. :0)

Yes, it is in full but bright shade. And yes, even we lowly humans melt over here too. Now, I cannot go out past 10am to do yard work due to the heat. Tried mowing the lawn after 12pm last week on Thursday and I know what melting feels like. Talk about having to take a cold shower in the middle of the afternoon. Hee hee hee.
