Patching a Roof Vent Hole in the Roof

1 month ago I moved into a new housing development.

The radon mediation contractor
needed to move the 4" vent pipe hole in the roof to a different location
to fit in the exhaust fan.

How would you recommend
patching the old hole location where the pipe exited the roof?

I am not sure I like how the
roofers on-site patched the hole.

My understanding is they took a
1/2" piece of plywood and placed between the rafters in the
attic and nailed it in place from the exterior side of the roof while it
was being held flush against the roofing sheathing on the inside.

Then took the 4" circular
piece of wood from the newly drilled hole and filled the gap on the roof from
the old hole and re-shingled.

My question is; how can
I fortify the 1/2" piece of plywood in the attic so it will not sag
over time if the nails don't fully hold. Why they didn’t use screws
is beyond me.

The radon installer tried to
bend the nails over the best he could.

Others may disagree, but that sounds like a reasonable fix to me, especially if they used cement coated nails.

But if you're worried, there are a couple of things you can do to further shore it up. You can drive in some screws yourself, and/or add a couple of pieces of 2x4 lumber across the patch, screwed or nailed into the rafters or trusses on either side of it.

DH and I installed a vent in our upstairs bathroom, venting through the roof. Did it ourselves - no leaks. We have cold, snowy winters and stormy summers - no leaks. My Mom's house was built in 1977, range hood vented though the roof. This is nothing new. What does your friend's GC do, exactly? I have a vaulted ceiling, and the only issue I can see with venting the range hood is enclosing the vent line so it looks halfway decent. I've see photos of them (standard range hood, with cabinets above) cased in with drywall, bricks, and wood. Again, not rocket surgery.

The ducting is not suspended from the roof jack and especially not that short a length. Your approach for locating is correct, but in addition, cut a small hole and adjust from there, allow the ducting to protrude above the foam and use spray foam as a filler. Use a urethane caulking to attach the roof jack to the foam, then lap the edges of the roof jack with fiberglass tape saturated with the urethane caulking to seal.

You can't alter the truss without an engineer's stamp and that's gonna cost ya. That should be your last resort.

AhhHaa,if the jack was desighned for rubber shield,that might fit better than conventional metal collar. At any rate,the space between pipe and jack is normal because (A) The jack also work's for double wall pipe from gas water heater which is a little fatter and (B) The space alow's air space when single wall pipe is hot.
