mower battery start question

I just found a toro with electric start and it reminds me of my parents mower with same. Anyone out there have one- how long did the battery last you before replacing? If it lasted several years, what did u do?

I ask because it uses the same battery that i use on computer UPS' which last 4-5 years but my parents battery lasted 1 year each- of course only to start occasionally and charge even less frequently.

Like all Batteries proper preventative maintenance is critical !

Very true. Some Toro's come complete with a charging system that helps maintain the battery and an auxiliary charger. Many will last 7+ years.

Yep, unless you have a heavy duty Cummins diesel on yer tractor............keep yer diethyl ether starter fluid on yer shelf. In all fairness though, and to clarify somewhat, The use of ether based starting fluid in all kinds of gasoline powered engines is NOT AS LIKELY to cause damage if used sparingly when the temperatures of the engine and ambient air are 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. The explosive blast that can break piston rings and stress other parts is less apt to occur when the temperatures are that cold. Where people stand the most risk of doing damage is when they use ether starting fluid at higher ambient temperatures or they feed it to an engine that has already been run and warmed up. Another factor that can increase the risk of damage from ether is is the spark timing. If there is a condition/defect causing the spark to occur earlier than normal...........the chances of breaking things increases significantly. A shot of the commercially available spray can carb cleaner is much gentler on the engine than ether. It comes down to this: Diesel engines are built a lot heavier and designed to handle much higher combustion chamber pressures than a paltry little gasoline powered engine. A shot of ether exploding in a diesel engine is like a firecracker to that engine. A shot of ether exploding in a gasoline engine is more akin to dynamite.

Some folks can type messages on a computer, and some folks can start their tractors after a very long winter---but--never the twain shall meet! That said---better call the repair shop---you'll be neck high in grass by the time you get it to run! And, if you get it hooked up the way you asked about, the only thing that will run is you, as the garage lights up, and you run for the garden hose! Better seek close at hand professional help!

I would charge the battery and get a basic multimeter so you can do a draw test and check your charging system output. To perform a draw test, remove the negative battery cable and set the meter to DC volts. Put the leads between the - terminal and the - lug on the battery. No reading is ideal, but usually you will see a trace draw in the .5 volt range. Next test run the tractor and run it wide open. Put the leads of the meter on the battery to see if the value is greater that with it not running. If it is inconclusive, mow a half hour and recheck. A full charged battery should be in the area of 12.6 volts. When running, you will see a higher rating. With yours 13- 14.5 volts DC. Report back what you find.

The basics would say to clean the battery cables on both ends and have the battery load tested- new or not. The solenoid needs a good ground as well. Your voltage readings at the solenoid- I assume the battery terminal? The trigger wire should have none until cranked.

on a push mower?? Which models?? You must mean riding mower. Even with rider, the charging system is very crude being it doesn't electronics just simple voltage out to battery - at least every rider sold retail.

ssewalk1 as i said- anything special i need to do? charging when low, store in garage, etc. not enough? Guess just bad design-battery life at least.

Upup : Actually just the normal slow charge policy Bud . Never let a normal cranking amp battery repeatedly go lower than half charge If your mower has no charging circuit than an Rv style or Marine Grade is preferable . Always charge at a slow rate , with trickle charge (2amp) or max 5-10 amp on auto cycle shutoff . The smaller The battery the more critical to charge slow to avoid heat , which can warp plates and damage battery electrolytes . What model Toro , a few had a charging diode , most did not . You simply plug in you trickle charger to the mower when you not using it . Even the units with a charging unit could barely keep the battery fresh , and thus the discontinuance of this feature . P.S. Cold storage is best heat is what damages batteries !

I plugged in the charger when it sounded like it wasn't cranking as fast as fully charged. I used the charger that came with it so i assume they made it for slow charge but then again.....

Is your battery a maintenance free unit . If not check your cells for proper electrolyte levels . One weak cell is all it takes . Their not expensive Wal-Mart Deep Cycle would be your best bet , under $40.00 . Life Cycle normally 5-6 yrs .

both past and this one, do not use car acid batteries. They use the dry cell type used in computer UPSs. After a while my mom didn't cut grass any more so my dad didn't replace it. I just removed it from the mower i just found. (it runs like a charm, just sump was leaking oil)

Oh , same sealed Dry Cell style as on my Trolling motor . Yeah their inexpensive , but must be charged very slowly , small capacity units that can overcharge . Glad the mower is back in use !
