What a lovely idea, and your daughter will have a living memory of her wedding day as well as her mother to take to her new home. I was happy to find last year the rose that was in my wedding bouquet (Champagne) and it even survived our winter OK (an even better surprise).

You're OK rooting something commercial if it's out of patent, which is 20 years or more. That means that the tried and true HT roses that are widely sold tend to be OK to root and propagate. I checked off-hand, and the following white roses would be OK to root: JF Kennedy, Bridal White, June Bride, Champagne (yay), Honor, and Mount Hood. I'm sure there are others. If you have a particular rose in mind you can check helpmefind and they list patent dates in the description. Rooting the rose this year can mean that she might have a blooming plant next year, though I wouldn't count on having blooming roses from the new plant by a particular wedding date. I'd plan on contributing roses from a mature bush for the actual bouquet, and then root the same variety for her to have.

If you're going to try to root the actual rose that is physically in her bouquet, rooting it after you take it out of the bouquet, I think there are some complications that arise in the processing of the roses for florists to use. I seem to remember that they dip or spray florist roses in something that discourages them rooting, so it's an uphill battle to get it rooted. You also have some significant drying involved in carrying the bouquet, which can also limit your success in rooting it. If you find out ahead of time what kind of roses they'll have in the bouquet, you can hunt out a plant of that rose and have it ready for her to grow her own in case the rooting doesn't work from the bouquet rose.

Either way it's a lovely sentiment and and interesting process to try.

I would have loved this. It's true that so Erinyes florists roses are so stones hard to root and not all are good gardenroses, preferring the perfect greenhouse environment. I would keep the garden Rose idea in mind when going with her to choose her roses. There are many that make beautiful cut roses and should be available to florists. You wouldn't need to root the actual rose( but you could try - but if it failed it wouldn't be as heartbreaking) but could buy the same variety of rose plant for her yard.

If she uses an arch you could use that in the area, either planting them next to or over the arch (if it's climbing but not too vigorous).

Suncoast, that is a brilliant idea of growing same roses in her yard that she will use in her wedding. Memories :))

Vap, I have no clue except they were from the florist. The green is hydrangeas. And the leaves are eucalyptus and ferns.

I have done this many times with cut florist roses and when they actually do take and root, they do very well. I recently bought two bouquets for my grandmother for mothers day, one lavender and one yellow and I was able to root a few of the lavenders. Last sunday I planted them in the garden so I will be keeping an eye on them to see how they do.

Thanks to everyone for your input, I would like to try to root the roses used in her bouquet and still might try, it couldn’t hurt anyway. On the thought of using roses or flowers grown in my own garden, I’m just not sure it would work out since she will be getting married in March and I usually do not have anything blooming during that time but it is a good idea.

Nosometer congratulations on your recent wedding! Your centerpieces are gorgeous! I’m sure your wedding was beautiful. I’m very excited about my daughters wedding, we have already talked to the florist and she is going to incorporate some David Austin roses in the bridal bouquet, I know I won’t be able to root those due to the licensing thing but that’s ok, I’ll give her a DA rose bush to plant in her yard as a wedding gift lol.

Noseometer, blessings on your recent wedding and you had a fabulous array of roses for the tables! It's too bad that the florist roses couldn't have the scent that you also value in the roses, but it's also lovely to have someone else doing the work on the big day when you have other priorities.

That's something else for you to consider Boncrow since you'll have your own priorities as mother of the bride and may not be thinking about other details. You're right that it can't hurt to try to root roses from the bouquet as long as you don't get your hopes up. You might start checking around florists that your daughter would like to use to see what kinds of roses they would have available to use, then check out here and see what might be the most garden-worthy of those to choose from. Having a separate bush to give as a wedding gift takes the pressure out of everyone's day for the actual wedding.

I agree: worth trying if it is fun to do. You might consider a backup i.e. a promise note for a rose bush, for a rose bush that would look similar to the roses in the bouquet. It would be fun to choose the variety together also and take some pressure off of having successful rooting. March would be too early here also for roses from the garden. I was thinking of DA roses also, but at $8/stem, it was cost prohibitive (imagine 14 dozen at that cost)! And yes, like you, I also thought about buying the DA florist roses and trying to root them! But I behaved myself for once. No, the roses I got weren't very fragrant, but with that many roses, the room still smelled of roses, particularly with the rose scented moisturizer in the bathroom that everyone was using, the whole room smelled of roses.

I agree with you Cynthia I want as little stress as possible lol. I think a rose bush similar to something in her bouquet is a good idea. She will have lavender, blush and white roses in her bouquet so maybe a Love Song or PJPII would be good choices.

Nosometer I would love to have all the roses be DA as well but that’s not going to happen lol. The florist said we could choose one DA type of florist rose and add maybe three or four to her bouquet and her bouquet will be the only one with DA roses. It’s an exciting time but I’ll be glad when it’s over lol.

i still might try to root something out of her bouquet just for fun but who knows by that time I may be over it and not even want to try.
