Mislabeled Trade. What is it?
Comments (10)OK... this was bugging me so I went out and tromped through a wet garden and checked some plants. I got the information that Cheatin Heart and its ilk has red dots on petioles and scapes from a hosta database. On my garden plants of Faithful Heart and Heartbroken, this is true - sort of. The scapes have them - but only on the south side! The north side of the scape is pure green. And I don't see any red dots on the petioles. I think this is typical of a lot of hostas - a chemical response to light level. This is not the kind of red that would get them on the "red list." Lots of hostas have red dots but are not red enough to qualify as reds. Regarding the leaf size, I always think first of my Cheatin' Heart which has consistently stayed small - toward the mini - with leaves only in the 1 inch size. Right next to it are Faithful Heart and Heartbroken - leaves about 2 x 2 1/2. I guess maybe my CH is a dud. So I'm still thinking that IA or a similar sport is the best guess for your plant, given that it was originally labeled CH and it shares all the characteristics of that bunch, including the kind of leaf sheen, leaf shape, leaf size, scape appearance (and timing)... Of course, it might change as it grows up and be one of a hundred other possibilities....See MoreMislabeled plants - what are these really?
Comments (5)Number one looks like Epipremnum aureum(pothos).2 is hard to I.d. because of flat leaves and side view, but 2 and 3 look like they could be the same plants because of similar leaf structure and veining. Are these all indoor houseplants? I'm sure you'll probably get a posative I.d. here but if not try the houseplants forum.I bought two of what were supposed to be Orange Perfection phlox this spring and they had light lavender colored blooms.Unfortunately I threw away the receipt. It was a very reputable nursery and I'm sure they would have replaced them for me....See MoreMislabeled Costa Plants, what is it?
Comments (12)So…maybe…I think… In reading Justin’s great descriptions and looking at photos from the Costa Farms website… I believe tsome are Manjula. They look like my mature Manjula and the leaves are less flat as Justin described. And looking at the photos from the Costa Farms website, both the Pearls and Jade and Glacier have smaller leaves. I think Glacier is smaller than P&J. So…Manjula? – Compared to my Manjula – And I think these are Pearls and Jade, especially looking at the photos from the Costa Farms website. Pearls and Jade from the Costa Farms website: And I don’t think any of the plants really were Glacier. In reading the description and looking at the photos from the Costa Farms website, I think this plant that I bought elsewhere and was not labeled and was not from Costa Farms, is Glacier. And as Justin said that Glacier is NOT patented, any nursery could propagate it and call it whatever they want or not call it anything. I think that Glacier has smaller leaves and they are more “pointed” than the other “pothos” but the points are more of a rounded point, whereas the P&J is pointed as well but a more “pointier” point??? This probably does not matter a wit to anyone but I think it is fun to try to see differences and know if I really have one of each. Glacier from the Costa Farms website: I think this plant (not from Costa Farms) is Glacier. Leaves seem a bit more "crinkly" and I have read that is true of Glacier. Also I have seen plants that look like this sold in grocery stores and other places that were unlabeled. Makes sense if the plant is not patented. And to keep it interesting. Here is my plant (bought at a small hardware store that sells plants) that I believe is N’Joy. It has small leaves too but there is no spotting in the white and the white and green are very defined. Thoughts?...See MoreAny idea which mislabeled Austin rose is this?
Comments (45)Thanks HelloBlondie. The only bloom photo I took was a second-third day bloom - it’s got that faded yellow color. There are three young buds on the bush now and once they opened up I’ll be able to see the color of a first day bloom (supposed to be more saturated yellow) in order to further confirm Charles Darwin ;)...See Moreoldrosarian
