Need recommendations to add style/color/texture to living room.
Comments (85)I think you can use a large armoire on that wall to store games/books. With your ceiling height, you need a taller piece like that. It would look especially nice once you have a longer, lower console, but you could keep the one you have for now. The vertical art piece is nice also, but wait to hang it until you know what your furniture arrangement will be. The current console and white open shelves don't work together because they are both the same height and different styles. You can find some great used armoires from people that are downsizing....See MoreLiving Room Too Matchy-Matchy? How To Add Color?
Comments (58)I think part of what make the shelves feel light and not like built-ins is that they have no side and they extend past the cabinets below them and over the mantle. not sure there's much that can be done about the latter, but to address the former, something anchoring them to the wall could help. Could be literally something anchoring them, like a decorative bracket, or something that gives a vertical feel that gives a feeling of connection with the cabinets below, like the trailing plants that some have mocked up. You could also try something like stacking books on their sides or adding a book end to normally stacked books....See MoreHelp designing living room, hanging artwork, what to add?
Comments (49)BeverlyFLADeziner Peter, some of the advice you receive is not worth anything. ------------- No need for insults. Don't take my word for it. Feel free to look at all the threads that say, I painted my walls gray or purchased a gray sectional or installed gray carpet, what is wrong with my room? The problem is almost always because the gray is fighting with oak floors or tan walls or warm whites. Yes, gray and tans can work together but it takes decorating skill. If you are a decorating novice, make your life easier. Stick with the same color tones. On my screen the sofas show as dark brown. If they are in fact black, a warm dark wall would still help balance and work with the predominant tones in the room....See MoreI'm stupid, need color suggestions for living room light sage, browns?
Comments (6)Not stupid. Picking paint colors is always hard, and some rooms are just particularly challenging. I've seen a lot of rooms on this board, and believe me that your room qualifies as particularly challenging. Before you tackle paint, you should improve your lighting, since it can make all the difference in choosing colors. The room IS dark (look at the difference between your photos and the realtor's professionally lit photos!), and if you aren't getting light from outside, you need to compensate with more, better interior light. I don't see any floor or table lamps in your furnishings; that's one place to start. Are the foyer pendant, ceiling fan, and dining fixture the only ceiling lights in the room? Any recessed cans? I would start with brighter LEDs in all the ceiling fixtures, and maybe tweak the color temperature (though I think your problem is more that you don't have enough lumens than about color temperature). Can you address the carpet on the stairs without tackling the carpet in the upstairs? I was just looking at DIY stair carpet removal and refresh with paint. It's a lot of work. (https://www.remodelaholic.com/under-100-carpeted-stair-to-wooden-tread-makeover-diy/). I wouldn't paint the wood trim. My sympathies on your divorce. Regardless of the circumstances, the process is difficult and disruptive and expensive....See More- 5 years agolast modified: 5 years ago
