After my intial post on this subject, I searched termites on the web and what I have looks exactly like termites. They don't have wings, don't jump and the soil has been allowed to dry in between waterings. The one pot I had sitting on a wire bench and tunnel like things were protruding from the bottom of it. I touched them with gloved hands and they disintegrated like fine dust with tiny white spots in it-possibly termite eggs? I don't know but so far that's what it appears to be. Some information I found online said that termites do live in soil. I'll try to get a photo of the insects and post it tomorrow. Thanks for the replies.

Here is a very "green" or organic treatment. Crush 3 garlic clove, I mean really make a crushed paste from them. Put them in a quart glass jar. A pickle or mayo jar is fine. Put it in the sun and let it sit for a couple of days. Strain the water through a cloth, paper towel or coffee filter. Put about 3 drops of dish washing liquid (Dawn, Joy, Dove) and mix slowly. Now put the liquid in a spray bottle sit it outdoors and in the shade and spray your plant. Check it the next day and spray again if needed. You can also spray the soil. When the bugs are gone, use the hose to wash it off well and bring back inside.

Definitely nymphs of leaf-footed bugs (close relatives of stink bugs that do very similar damage). Kill them with fire! Assassin bugs, particularly milkweed assassin bug nymphs, can look very similar.. and you definitely don't want to kill those. But assassin bugs nymphs never hang out in groups, and rarely get onto fruit. There are other subtler differences. The proboscis-like feeding spike or beak (called a "rostrum") on the mouth of the assassin bug is short, thick, and segmented. Every once in a while you'll catch an assassin bug actually feeding on its prey with its rostrum swung forward to pierce the other bug. Leaf-footed bug nymphs also have a proboscis-like mouthpart, but it is much longer and thinner. It folds underneath the body like in the assassin bug, but extends far beyond the head. It can be hard to tell when they're feeding, but if you look close enough you can see their rostrum piercing your prized garden produce. The other distinguishing factor for leaf-footed stink bugs.. is the leaf-like appendage on the feet. It is really subtle and undeveloped on the nymphs, but obvious once you compare it to the assassin bugs. Kill the nymphs while you can, because the adults are far harder to get rid of. Neem oil (the true oil, not the "clarified hydrophobic extract of neem" sold as an active ingredient) is a decent "anti-feedant".

That's fine :) it's all the same stuff "IPA" be it used for injection swabs or tapehead cleaning. I buy IPA in 99.9% purity for electronic equipment cleaning and cut it with water to whatever % I need. It can dry out fine thin leaves of herb seedlings that I sprayed with 99.9% IPA (whoops! My bad) but thicker jade leaves wouldn't be bothered by IPA diluted 1:1-1:2 with water.
