lava rock OK with Phal Violacea?
Comments (9)Like other Phals, P. violacea does best with continuous moisture in the root environment, but not in prolonged sogginess. The roots need air also. In my experience, cocunut husk chips (CHC) have provided the best air-moiture balance for them, but some prefer bark or Sphagnum moss or a mixture of media. The best medium can vary depending on local conditions. Lava rock is a very dry, airy medium. If you plant a violacea in it, you will have to maintain high humidity and/or water frequently. Conditions would have to be about the same as if you mounted it. The first thing you'd probably see after transferring a Phal into lava rock would be the death of the roots that formerly grew in a more moisture retentive medium. The plant would have to put out new roots that could acclimate to the new medium. I wouldn't put lava rock on top of moss. Sphag already has the disadvantage of compacting and becoming soggy. You'd only be contributing to anaerobic conditions in the pot. Bark or CHC - maybe....See Moresmall disaster restoration: would ldearly love p'shop help...
Comments (104)Hmmm...we'll work out something--maybe Friday? And you know what, I meant to add that I was really underwhelmed by the experience of painting with the MoorGuard. Are Exterior paints generally thinner than interior? I then went in and put on a coat of EK (ICI-Dulux) interior semi-gloss on some window trim and it was a completely different experience. The Aura was more like the ICI. I'm wondering if there's a better exterior paint that I could mix the Sandy Hook Gray in...I may take the sample in to ICI-Dulux and ask them to mix it in one of their exterior finishes. Any thoughts on that? What exterior paint do folks favor?...See MoreHELP GARDEN DESIGN DISASTER
Comments (34)I think the color of the house is beautiful. The color of the pond is what is throwing it off - it is hideous. As another said it needs to a darker color, but before I did that I would update the landscaping to see if there are better ideas regarding that pond. It doesn’t really fit the house at all especially with the statute. One of the problems with a big change is that you are not use to seeing it through the new lens. Your house color is fine - the landscaping and that pond thing need to be addressed IMO....See MoreHELP!!! Ugly 1950's Exterior Lava Rock and Brick. Need Advice!
Comments (23)Those white painted rocks in the pics above make the house look like its made of marshmallow fluff! Not a good look. OP, Im willing to bet that those rocks are on the front only, am I right? Usually I argue in favor of saving original house parts but i have to say, the 50s thing for attaching fake rocks or brick veneer to the front only (like we cant see the sides??) is really annoying. Take it off! (Be sure to post after pics). Glad the tree is staying. Its not that close, and looks to be in good shape - a good tree adds value to a house. When the time comes redoing your front beds and adding a snazzy new door will add much more appeal....See MoreCreative Visual Concepts, Kevin Strader
