Have a fun and safe Memorial Day
Comments (6)Yes, I think USA Americans seem to forget the real reasons for ALL our holidays. Such a pity to have lost our National traditions and values. Not too many around here even put out flags for the National holidays. When I was a kid, it was called "Decoration Day" because everyone, and I do mean everyone, went to the cemeteries in great numbers to decorate all the graves with FRESH flowers. We went up the canyon and gathered wild fern fronds and wildflowers to lay on our family graves. They didn't last long, but the were pretty for one day. It only took a little sacrifice of time and effort to do that for those who took a lot of effort and sacrificed everything for us. There are beautiful wild flowers out by the cemetery here and I like to pick them and make bouquets for the graves. So many people have no visitors out there so we give everyone flowers. Sometimes they make seeds and the next year I see them growing on the graves. That is really neat. I do put out silk flowers, too, because they last, but I always take bouquets of fresh flowers from my garden too. The VFW delivers flags for us every year to decorate all the war veterans graves. There are veterans from the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean, and the Viet Nam out there. Lest we Forget, we decorate their graves and hoist the big flag we got from the State Capitol building to fly over the cemetery. Thanks for viewing and your comment and the LINK, Natalie. ~Annie...See MoreMemorial Day - What's blooming?
Comments (18)Lisa: I have three peonies that do really well for me. My first peony was a Festiva Maxima (actually three Festiva Maximas). White Flower Farm had them on sale about 7 years ago, more or less, 3 for $25, and they said that they were overrun with them because they grew so well. Sounded good to me, and I've never regretted it. They've been blooming for a while and there are still buds coming. Bowl of Beauty opens a little later and is just opening now. I think I moved this peony last fall to get it out of a bad neighborhood and I didn't expect too much this year. It has about 13 buds on it with maybe four opening. The third peony that does well is I think Red Magic. I got it at an end of the season sale in Manomet three or four years ago (two plants for $5) and it blooms much later than the others. This photo is from June 27, 2009. It has lots of buds now, you can see them behind the Festiva Maxima. The bloom time doesn't overlap too much but the "red" is good with the raspberry splotches in F.M. Peonies definitely should be planted in the fall, in lots of sun. --------------------------------------------------------- Not a peony, but a self-seeded digitalis has just started opening today. This foxglove obligingly seeded itself last year next to my big Rosa Rugosa Yankee Lady and the colors matched beautifully. Even more obligingly, it came back this year in the same spot. I ran around last year shaking the seed heads in various places so I'm hoping for lots of new foxgloves. Claire...See MoreMy Memorial Day Table
Comments (9)Thank you everyone. Jeanne I decided use both sets of S@P' at the last minute. I'm glad I did. Punk I was surprised at how easily this this table came together. It seemed to have it's own idea about how it wanted to look. LOL Jane, The S@Ps aren't vintage. I like using fresh flowers when I can. The prices are reasonable at the grocery store. and they always have seasonal arrangements. I hope you are able to get out and about more now. Thank you sunnyca. I love when you pop in to comment. Thanks luvs, the little bowls came from CTS. How is your DH doing? Nana...See MoreMemorial Day T'scape...A few hrs left til Memorial Day!
Comments (11)Jeanne, your table is just lovely! The centerpiece is perfect, simple but so eye-catching. And you know that I love the addition of all the white bunnies (and tea pot). I am a firm believer that bunnies go with any and all holidays. LOL. Probably cause my house is overrun with the non-real kind. And none of those in the yard causing mischief, thanks to my life as a city dweller. Sorry I'm late to all the Memorial celebrations. And I never did get out my decor either. I'm going to give myself one more chance...4th of July...and if it stays packed again this year (be two in a row), then it will have to go. New rule I'm trying to enforce, stuff can NOT stay packed several years without seeing the light of day. I need to let someone else enjoy it if I can't. Anyway, I definitely enjoyed seeing your pretty things and am so glad you decorated for "us" here. ;o) hugs, Karen...See Morelily316
