Wow, you saved this horse and she looks amazing! Bless you for all the time, money and care you give to these animals, who would otherwise still be suffering, or dead.

Marilyn, she just looks amazing. And in 7 months! You must know just what to do.

I remember when you brought her home and showed us her picture. My plumber/friend was here and I shared it with him - he has horses. Now I'm going to have to watch for another drip or leak so I can have him back so he can see how improved.

I'm looking forward to more photos, it had been a while since you had posted any. We haven't seen Val, Frosty, the others for some time....

Emery is galloping and bucking? Isn't this the one that was almost starved to death with filthy water and you had to walk him home? The really old one? We need a picture, mud and all.

WHY is there such surplus of so many animals (horses, dogs, cats, you-name-it)? What drives this?

Chisue - well in Marilyn's area I'm sure a lot of them went homeless after the hurricane. Also a lot of people get animals and put absolutely no work into them and then can be bothered to "deal" with them when they don't turn out perfect. So they either give them away, drop them off at a pound or just let them outside to fend for themselves. People also don't fix their pets. It seems to be a problem in some of the major cities in Texas. San Antonio was supposed to be no kill by 2015 but that doesn't seem to be the case. Most likely because people get pets and don't fix them and leave them outside to breed like crazy. You can end up with a cat colony in less than a year if you don't get them fixed. Pet trends and movies also make all of this worse.

That's what Marilyn's TLC can do and she proves it over and over again. Marilyn, Rita is just beautiful. I'm sure Emery and all of the animals are too.

Horses, like every other domestic animal, suffer from being overly bred, and this being a disposable society, discarded. There is a huge demand for horse meat in some European countries and Asia. The Kill pen horses come from all over the country. Lots of them from back east, like my Bane. Other horses have out lived their usefulness and are sold as a matter of practicality. They go to auction.....maybe their owners hope for a good home....but that is where kill buyers get most of their horses. My little donkey family was picked up either before or after the hurricane and unclaimed. Animal control took them in....that's how I got them. Snoop was taken to auction but lacked paperwork to sell, so animal control picked him up too. Thirty years old with knees the size of grapefruits....worked hard all of his life, but his owner wouldn't provide retirement for him.....or maybe they did but he was living too long and rather than put him down, dumped him. Out of sight....out of mind. Emery belonged to a crazy woman who starved him for years. Finally she moved in with her daughter and just left him behind. I heard about him and I just went and got him. He wouldn't load in my trailer and rather than fight him....he was too frail. I walked him 12 miles home. (So I guess once again, he belongs to a crazy woman....but this one feeds him.)

Wonderful, Marilyn!!! I love what you do. You do know, there's a special place in heaven for you, don't you? You're going to be running around rescuing and saving every animal up there! LOL

They must have been very shy and withdrawn and mis-trusting when you got them. They must come running when they see you now!

Chisue, I live in a university city, and every year when school ends, there are cats and puppies left behind when the kids move back home. They obviously don't give a sh*t and like having a pet only when it suits them.

That’s all I can say regarding the transformation of Rita, Marilyn, just, wow.

Jasdip, actually most of them were very trusting and friendly. Shadow was traumatized because she was very small....less than 3 months old and abruptly taken from her mother, who was direct shipped to slaughter. Rita had obviously been handled a lot and knew all the basics. I don't know why her owner didn't claim her. Maybe didn't have the money to pay the fine. Val and Snoop were no nonsense horses. Had worked and not been babied. Val didn't know what a treat was.....does now. Snoop knew about treats but he acts like he expects to be hit all the time. Bane is an enigma....very friendly but also had been very mistreated. Emery has adapted well to being taken care of. He is like a grumpy old man....give me that and get out of my way! I feed him in his stall but he won't go in first. He walks right on my heels. I popped him....not hard...on the butt with my hand to get him to walk on into his stall and the old fart tried to kick me. I had to laugh about it. Normally I expect the horses to adapt to me, but I make allowances for him. He has earned the right to do whatever he wants.

It is so good to see and hear about creatures being rescued, taken care of and loved. Here we have a cat problem... dogs too but mostly cats. People seem to think they are disposable and do so in such horrible ways. We don't have much space but we do care for 8 cats plus. We get them fixed, if we can (some of the show ups won't let you near them) and look out for them. Always wish we could do more. We do support our local shelter with donations etc. just does not seem like enough.
