I need to transplant a couple of Zephirine Drouhin....
Comments (4)I've found it a lot easier transplanting large roses since I started thinking of them as like new bare root plants. You won't be able to get a decent root ball, so I'd say don't even try. Get as much fleshy root as you can. I would cut back the canes to a manageable size (2'-4') and strip all the foliage to reduce moisture loss. Then spray the canes with Wilt Pruf or another antitranspirant. With this treatment, you don't have to worry about providing shade or having the plants wilt themselves to death. They will grow out in a few weeks after fine roots have established themselves in the soil. There are other approaches that may or may not produce a large plant sooner....See MoreEden vs Zephirine Drouhin
Comments (10)I don't grow the other two, so I can't make a judgement there. Awakening does bloom well if dead-headed even in its slightly shaded location. I planted mine in the fall of 2017 and it has grown and bloomed well, especially for a new climber. I have many New Dawn and it is similar in all respects except a fuller flower. We'll see if it's as vigorous, but that may not be a fare comparison as most of my New Dawn are in full sun. Obviously, Eden is a gorgeous rose, but it lacks fragrance (I think), while ZD and Awakening are scented. Awakening also drops it's petals fairly cleanly so it looks neat most of the time. When I saw Pretty in Pink Eden I noticed it held onto its flowers so I'm assuming regular Eden would need dead-heading for looks as well as re-bloom. Could you grow a couple? That's always my solution to rose indecision! LOL! : P.S. I plan to grow Zephy between a couple of my ND on a fence. I thought it was what I was nurturing, but it ended up I was babying a cutting of Dr. Huey. : ( P.S. You might also look into PIPE as I've read it has superior blooming to the original, but without that uber romantic colouring....See More'Zephirine Drouhin'
Comments (14)Thanks for sharing such a beautiful lovely ZD! She clearly loves your climate. I really wanted to grow her, fragrant, thornless climber that can handle shade, what’s not to love. But once I read about how badly she mildews in California and seeing the specimen at Huntington Garden near my house in such a bad state I decided against it. But I realized there was another thornless pink climber, Climbing Pinkie, and so I got her last fall from ARE. Here she is just putting out her first cane that you can barely see in the shadows. The backs of her leaves have prickles, but otherwise so far completely thornless and a light fragrance, although ZD should be much more fragrant. For anyone in California she has spotless glossy foliage. I have her planted so she can eventually climb along the cable fence between our yard and the neighbors and we will be walking closely by to get down our respective narrow 5 ft wide side yards, houses are 10ft apart here, so I hope she stays thornless....See MoreBest Way to Espalier Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Roses?
