I need to transplant a couple of Zephirine Drouhin....
Comments (4)I've found it a lot easier transplanting large roses since I started thinking of them as like new bare root plants. You won't be able to get a decent root ball, so I'd say don't even try. Get as much fleshy root as you can. I would cut back the canes to a manageable size (2'-4') and strip all the foliage to reduce moisture loss. Then spray the canes with Wilt Pruf or another antitranspirant. With this treatment, you don't have to worry about providing shade or having the plants wilt themselves to death. They will grow out in a few weeks after fine roots have established themselves in the soil. There are other approaches that may or may not produce a large plant sooner....See MoreZephirine Drouhin
Comments (32)That's it! I'm definitely going to try growing this rose after seeing this post. It's so nice to see photos of the whole plant and especially showing the growth possibility over a timeframe. I've been reading about the early bloom, great fragrance of Zephirine Drouhin and the possibility of a repeat. Maybe it can be grown with another climber that can sort of take over if Zephirine Drouhin starts to get blackspot/need pruning back? PS That adorable little dog napping there is one of the sweetest pictures I've ever seen. The post is 3 years old but I just had to gush! And Tiffandrew that kitty on the bag is both hilarious and adorable too!!...See MoreIs this really Zephirine Drouhin?
Comments (5)Roseseek, It definitely has a beautiful bourbon scent, although not strong at all. literally had to shove the rose up my nose to smell it. And YES, not a thorn in sight. I read from someone else in my zone that because of our heat and humidity the smell is definitely much more milder. Shes been in the ground about 1.5 months. came as a bare root....See MoreZephirine Drouhin sport(?)
Comments (6)Mettebee, Martha is beautiful! I think it would be neat to collect all of Zephy’s sports. Main St, I hope so, too! It’s a very pretty, dainty color. Not quite like Zephy’s in your face pink. :) Yes, I do have mildew and black spot problems. Usually I just ignor it. Haha :) I’ve grown a clematis over it to cover the bare stems. The branches act like a living trellis. Mine is on it’s 3rd year, though, and has been much healthier this year. It has also been reblooming much better. Last year I got one bloom after the spring flush. This year she hasn’t been without blooms so far, and is setting more buds now....See Morejacqueline9CA
