How do you determine what size is right?
Comments (3)Hi mcdaisymom, We too, are in Texas (Arlington( and just finished with the whole pool design thing. Will sign contract Monday and get on the schedule to re-route some electric that runs thru our yard and get on dig schedule. We did not know what size to go with either. We have never built a pool before and had no concept of how many gallons or SF. We just had an idea of what we wanted. Diving pool, grotto, tanning ledge and volleyball area. We also had the pool area master plan drawn up - things we would like to do in the future, so we did not have to tear out in order to add. Then we held our breath. Amazingly, the whole master plan came back at a price we thought the pool alone would cost. In the end, we did have some other related expenses-like the re-routing of electricity-which costs $1761 (no quoted in pool price) and we are going with pavestone decking to tie into our existing patio (pool co. does not do pavestone) which is an added expense and more expensive than the exposed aggregage decking-so we eliminated some accessories to the pool, like a fire pit, that we can always add later. Really talk about what you want in a pool and then discuss with the builders you get bids from. Go with the whole master plan and then add or delete as necessary. Good luck...See MoreHow Do You Know What Size or Kind You Need?
Comments (21)I finally found a pillow I like -- at Costco! I don't recall the price, but think it was about $30 for two. (Since it was Costco I knew I could return it.) I'm a back/side sleeper. I've had it for three months. The package says "Charisma Luxury Down Alternative Pillow Two Pack" and "Jumbo 20in X 28in". I think the secret is that it has a gusset edge, so I can 'fluff' it up to give enough support. It's machine washable, although I haven't washed mine yet. The fiberfill is Comforel(TM) Silkysoft(TM). Hah! Now that I'm looking at the tag on the pillow I see it says it is 18" X 26" X 2" -- not exactly what the package advertised, eh? The covering is made in China, but the pillow is filled and finished in USA. Manufacturer is Hollander Home Fashions of Boca Raton, FL. Anyway...I really like it!...See MoreSmallest size when you buy mid-size trees?
Comments (15)I confess to using bare-root hedging stock. I mean, why would I buy a rowan or an alder for around $15 when I can buy a bundle of 10 for less than a quarter of the cost of one potted nursery tree. Literally - my beech and alders cost me around 30 cents each. That moment has passed now until autumn...my major planting season...so any containerised plants will be as tiny as I can find (and I did find a rather interesting spirea salcifolia as a replacement for the hateful buddleja in growth habit). Seems to be that hedging companies are a bit rare in the US although still much enthusiasm for rootballing in burlap...but buying trees uprooted as maiden whips means a fast and easy establishment and the possibility of training your trees from the outset (I have become increasingly fascinated with inosculation). Ah yes, the 'gallon' conundrum. I was utterly confused for years by the casual use of '5gallon' pots over on the rose forum...which are, in fact, 5 litre pots or just under 1 actual gallon...at least as far as the Austin pot sizing goes...and nearly all other potted roses apart from miniatures. And I have always been bewildered by the US measurement of 'cups'...which is even worse, and far more ambiguous than our imperial insistence on pounds and ounces. Teacups, beakers, builder's 1pint mugs? I went over to base 10 with vast relief...although my builder sweetheart still carries a flag of resistance for yards, feet and inches....See MoreHow do you feel about the size of your house?
Comments (77)@grapefruit1_ar Hah - you say you don't want to move from your primary home alive, I've told the mister we are dying in our current house because there's no way I will move to another in our lifetimes. I was the one who did the packing of boxes and all the other tedious but obligatory stuff in preparation for moving from our previous home - he only had to go see houses and take a ton of pictures of the ones visited, my parents helped out with the realtor-given property tours for because they already lived in Nebraska where we moved to. My mom ended up taking 'supplemental' photos because the mister was getting a little frustrated at the fact that I didn't think the ones he'd taken were sufficient nor showing all possible angles/views. :P My mom is a prolific photo taker, and she's super detailed (like I am) about things so really I should have just asked her to take all the photos while she and my dad were doing the home tours with the mister. I'd have gone out to Nebraska myself, but I had to stay and properly wrap up things with my legal practice, not to mention pack/be on site for showings/get the place ready including letting in various professionals to clean the chimney-replace sink hardware-add more lighting fixtures-etc...We decided to go ahead on moving in May 2017, put the house on the market in June 2017, had the place sold and escrow closed at the end of July 2017. My old car was sold and the title handed to the new owner a few days into August and the mister and I stayed at a nearby hotel with the dog until our flight out of LAX on August 5th. His work vehicle was already at our new house, but once we dropped our luggage off we went over to the dealership to pick up my new car - the transaction was done primarily online so it was super easy and convenient. The mister got a job offer out here right before I did, but his was on a shorter timeline before he'd have to give his now-boss an answer about whether or not he wanted to accept the position. Renting a place here at the same time as looking for a home to buy would eat up a lot of funds we really wanted to keep in the home purchase category of the budget. I also needed to put aside enough for taxes on the townhouse in SoCal that we sold (and other taxes related to both of the property transactions)....See Morelaceyvail 6A, WV
