Pendants over island - 24''- 27" from top for small size ones?
Comments (1)We are both reasonably short, (5'4" and 5'6") but I have mine at 35" above the surface. The higher they are, the more light they cast. Also, if they are clear, you want them high enough so the light doesn't hit your eye so directly. Also, your guests may not be as short as you. Unlike a dining table, you are frequently reaching forward over an island to clean or grab something, and you don't want to be hitting your head on the light, as may often happen at a DR table where it's 30" above the surface....See MorePendants or cans over my island? Your opinions please!!
Comments (16)@Sophie Wheeler -- Thank you for taking the time to offer your advice on how to better improve the flow of the kitchen. It is very kind of you to help others. Our cabinets are already ordered so it is too late to change layout. In any event, I think with all choices there are trade offs. When my neighbor redid her kitchen and implemented the design you suggested, she lost her pantry --as Tina Klucsik suggested would happen. She now uses a closet under the stairs as her pantry. I prefer my pantry in the kitchen. In the 12 years I have lived in this house, I never once thought I wish I had more prep space. Actually, I think I have only had three complaints about my kitchen. 1) I hate the shutters over the windows by the kitchen table -- I like bright, wide open windows. I was always afraid to take them down because we have shutters everywhere in the house. (They were here when we moved in.) I have decided to go crazy and remove them. 2) I hate the clutter on the kitchen island. So I studied what exactly gets put on the kitchen island and designed storage options to accommodate that. Fingers crossed. And 3) I wished we had a couple of seats at the end of the island. So we are adding that. I know we can sometimes be surprised with things we didn't know we needed. When we bought the house, the folks who lived here before left the granite top kitchen table -- it is so heavy it was too expensive to move to the East Coast. I kind of thought the granite top kitchen table was a little strange (never having had one before), but now I can't imagine having anything different because it is so unbelievably durable and everything just cleans right up. (Finger paint, spilled easter egg dye -- you name it!) Also, it doesn't get scratched and it doesn't get water rings. That is a long way of saying I really appreciate folks sharing their wisdom and introducing reluctant remodelers to new ideas....See Morependants over 'moveable' island/table
Comments (5)Yes, I was looking for something similar, but I had trouble finding one that a) can hang on a sloped ceiling AND b) could hang from a 15' ceiling. I figured I need one that can hang at least 78" to reach counter height, figuring 36" for the island and 36" above the island (subtracted from about 150" of the ceiling, since it won't be at the 15' peak). I found one, from Wayfair "Ariel" Dome Pendant light that may work, but my husband hates it, plus it's metal and he wanted glass... argh. And do I need 1 or 2? Another constraint is that some lights don't ship to my zip code in CA because they don't meet the energy standards... My husband also thought that pully-lights had a lot of strings (he called it the 3 string S shape) and it looked too busy... but I liked it! K...See MoreLighting Over Island, Table or Both?
Comments (1)This might be an interesting situation in which to look at under-counter or even toe kick lighting for your work table in the kitchen. Overhead lighting from cans can sometimes come across as harsh, so if you had your linear light on over the dining table, then you could turn on softer light from underneath the work table at lower levels for ambience if you wanted and get some illumination in the kitchen while you are eating. Depending on your kitchen dimensions and the size of the can lights, you might need more than just one. I ran across the greatest overview on how to plan lighting from the manufacturer Juno. This link is from one of its vendors, Green Electrical Supply, and talks about how to plan placement and number of lights in a kitchen area: https://www.greenelectricalsupply.com/Juno_Lighting_Techniques_and_Planning_Tips.pdf...See Morecpaul1
