Removing paint from brick

We are looking to remove stone overlay on our 90 year old fireplace. The original brick is under the stone that was put on by the person who remodeled. We removed one small piece to see what was behind the stone, and noticed that the original brick has been splattered by paint. It seems when the contractors spray painted the walls/mantle, they didn't protect the brick leaving it speckled in paint.

How can we restore the brick or remove the paint? The work to cover the brick is very modern and doesn't fit the home (and it was poorly done), which is why we would love to bring back the original brick.

Thanks,

Brooke
