Good Shampoo/Conditioner

Official first world problem alert :)

I'm freaking out--the hair products I've used forever have been discontinued and I don't know what to do!

My hairdresser recommended a line of shampoo/conditioner/treatment, Goldwell Kerasilk, years ago and I've used them ever since. It is by far the best product I've ever used and it has worked so well on my hair. Said hair is fine, straight and abused by having been highlighted for many years, blown dry and subjected to a straightening iron frequently. I also live in South Florida so during the summers I"m out in the salt or chlorine water frequently and the subtropical sun too of course.

I went on Amazon this weekend to re-order shampoo/conditioner (which I have always bought in giant vats that last forever) only to discover that it's been discontinued.

So my point, and I do have one LOL, is to ask for suggestions from others about good hair care products for hair like mine....I don't mind paying more (the Kerasilk stuff was pricey but worth it). Of course if there's a line out there that works great and ISN'T pricey, even better!

I'm going to also check with my hairdresser, since she was the one who originally set me up with the Kerasilk.

Thanks in advance, from someone carefully hoarding shampoo as of now.

I don't have any recs for a replacement shampoo, but I do have a shampoo saving tip. My hairdresser told me it was preferable to put a small amount of shampoo in a cup and dilute that with water and then lather it in my hair. He said putting the shampoo directly from your hands to your hair uses much more product and makes it harder to rinse out properly. You would be amazed by how much less shampoo that uses, so your limited supply could last twice as long.

Good luck finding a great new shampoo.

I’m not sure where you were looking, but Amazon is still selling all the Goldwell Kerasilk products. The Duo shampoo/conditioner will be back in stock May 31. Didn’t see anything about discontinued. Also if you google Kerasilk is available on many sites.

In the case of shampoos, if you color your hair, you should spend the extra money on shampoos that protect your color. Unfortunately I have found most inexpensive shampoos and conditioners contain alcohol, and even some of the more pricey (like Pantene)have alcohol. Look at the ingredients. If it has alcohol, it will strip your color and ultimately dry out your hair. Many inexpensive conditioners make your hair feel conditioned because they contain wax which does nothing but coat the hair. The combination of wax and alcohol will ultimately require you to use more product and wonder why your hair is so dry without it. There was a special on one of the news shows (I think 60 minutes) that exposed the fact that many of the products we buy today like conditioner and lotion actually contain ingredients, like alcohol, that do the opposite of what you think they should. What good is a moisturizer or conditioner that drys you out?

I have hair that's fair-colored, naturally curly, & fine to medium textured, so it's easy to damage, & naturally dry in our hot & dry to hot & humid climate (central Arkansas). I was told I needed something with a lot of natural moisturizing ingredients, and I started buying TCB ethnic and Aussie Moist shampoos & conditioners again after using many different expensive salon brands for a year or more. But, I love Dove's new 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner! It's great for when I stay with relatives & in-laws, or on the go (i.e. at gyms & public pools) all of which where showers & bathroom time are limited.

I used Pantene for years but then it seemed like the conditioner stopped making my hair feel soft, so I switched to Fructis for now. My niece who is a hair dresser says we actually should be careful about using the great smelling products because they usually contain a lot of alcohol, but I just love the scent! Just some trivia, my sister learned in med school that hair and nails are incorrectly sometimes referred to as being dead because there is no pain when they are cut. But that is simply because they contain no nerve cells.

I was using too much conditioner to combat the frizzies and it was weighing down my curls. Since I switched to shampoo bars and a vinegar rinse a year and a half ago, my hair has much more body and better curls. DH, who had used Head and Shoulders for decades because he said other shampoos made his scalp itch, has had no itching since switching to shampoo bars.

I just wanted to mention that if you spend a lot of time swimming, you should try out some swimmer-specific shampoo to use after time in chlorinated or salt water. I use Malibu Swimmers Wellness Shampoo several times per week after swimming and it has done a wonderful job of keeping my hair healthy.

As for regular shampoo and conditioner, I used to be loyal to Aveda products (upon the recommendation of my hairdresser). But at some point I found my hair feeling limp and dry. I decided to try out a few other products and I've been happy with these. I'm not certain if they would work for your specific situation, but they've kept my hair soft and full despite swimming in chlorinated water multiple times per week.
