Installation Tips for Tilers: Toto Wall Hung Toilets
Comments (0)One of my most basic rules at work is MOCK IT UP. I do this all the time because one I don't trust anyone or any thing mostly and have learned that is always better to follow my own rules than printed ones. This last Toto Wall Hung Toilet install a perfect case in point. The carrier was of course installed all ready and had four bolt locations but no bolts. The toilet had a foam template of sorts and a flush plate. But no toilet. I asked and later the toilets where delivered to the site but until such time I just refused to install the tile. Once onsite I learned that the foam template was wrong and that the real cut outs needed much much smaller. So if your tiling your Toto toilet make sure you measure the bowl itself. You don't need anything pretty. I used a simple square cut out and later drilled the holes in place. Prior to setting the tile I used scrap cardboard to keep the threaded hole from getting blocked. Here is a picture. See how tight the tile comes down to the water intake hole (top black trim)? The other toilet downstairs was in a bathroom being done by the other tile guy. He used the template - he came back to replace that tile and wasted a half day. I took some steps to beef up the toilet in the back. Beef up the wall more like it. Hope this helps. With this Toto toilet I kept the tile a 1/4" back from the foam jig in place over the flush plate. Of course I measured off of the flush plate and the foam and found doing that mock up that the instructions where wrong.... And people wonder why I have such a hard time following instructions. I find that more times than not they are wrong.... The School of Hard Knocks is always open. Everyone is welcome to attend. Comments (10)@sunarakaa - it may be too late, but I would say, listen to your plumber. I have Kohler veil, and it recently leaked, causing water damage in the room below. A valve broke, and the space in the wall behind the plate is too tight to replace it. Now looking at having to tear out tile to get to the tank. So, if you do use one, don't put tile over it! Also, the Kohler one has super cheap plastic pieces attached to the side with velcro that constantly fall off, and, for some reason, gets ridiculously dirty (flush pushes stuff up under the rim). Totally do not recommend Kohler!...See MoreRetrofit Toto washlet on top of toto toilet..floor to ceiling tiles??
Comments (16)What room is behind the wall where you need to put the electrical outlet? After all, the wall cavity is accessible from either side! Even with a cement board behind the tile, a professional can drill through the cement and wall tile from the backside to make an outlet, after removing drywall to deal with the running of the new circuit. You will have to check if the model you want needs a circuit of its own, separate from the existing bathroom outlet. If if does not, your electrician may be able to extend that existing run to the new outlet position. Once the work is done, the drywall can be patched (or plastered - whatever you have there) in the room behind the bathroom. My new outlet for my Toto seat is on the wall next to the toilet. If your toilet is in the corner, you may have the option of two walls, as I did....See MoreWall-hung toilet in a brick wall
Comments (10)I was thinking about making 2 layers of brick wall (my contractor says each will be 15cm) to hide the tank and pipes. So definitely it will be the opposite of space-saving. But it does help when I insist on sloping the whole bathroom floor. The reason I want to slope the whole bathroom floor is because I never feel that wiping the toilet with disinfectant is enough. I want to be able to wash it and the floor around it completely because, you know, boys urinate there too. I’m just wondering if there are more maintenance consequences with this type of toilet, whether the gasket will wear faster or whether it will leak more. Also, since the tank and pipes will be sandwiched between two brick walls, do I need to create a large panel just in case they need repairs one day? Or is the flush panel enough?...See More- 5 years ago
