Lilac rejuvenation - how to handle suckers?

I inherited a old lilac when we bought our house two years ago. It had been pruned to form a single thick trunk, but there was almost no top growth and the trunk was showing signs of rot, so I cut it to the ground last year in the hope that it would come back healthier. It sent up a few suckers last fall before going dormant.

This spring I have noticed a lot more suckers, all of which seem fairly healthy. They're growing in a loose circle around the old trunk, more or less. Should I allow them all to grow, or choose a cluster of the best-looking ones and cut back the rest? The back edge of the circle is rather close to the fence line so I'm thinking those may have to be cut regardless. Thanks for your input!
