Rejuvenating old lilacs...

meadow_lark

I have two old lilac bushes at the back of my yard. Both are about 6 feet high. One bush has a single branch coming out of the ground, several feet from the other bush, which has multiple branches. You can see from the base of each bush that they were at one time, large bushed... but they have been neglected up until now.

I get blooms on both each spring. (IÂve lived in my house for 6 years. The lilacs are in an area IÂve just finished cleaning out It was a mess!)

I had a tree service come in recently and limb up ALL of the trees, to allow light to come into the yard and onto the sun-deprived plants.

How and when can I cut the lilacs back, in order to rejuvenate them?

Thanks so much ItÂs almost SPRING! Meadow Lark
