I think this is one of those occasions when hanging just above the window would be best. Don't worry about the expanse of wall above it, just enjoy the space. Apologies -- I see I left a bit of curtain hanging around in the upper right corner. Oops.

I'd stay away from curtains. Your space is very airy, open, and modern.

Instead I'd purchase fake arches and put several of them above your windows (hard to tell from your pix, but maybe 4?).

And then shutter the actual windows!

Also consider a much larger rug with a slightly darker color. It will help ground the room to the people level. When the people space is full decorated with curtains, rugs, accessories, art, etc, the high ceilings will look light and airy, not bare.

I have a question.

Without seeing the rest of the room, is there a reason the seating area is not centered under the chandelier? The angle of this picture is a bit wonky, but I'm also thinking the chandelier should have been mounted a bit lower.

It may be just the angle, but it looks as though your furniture is almost ready to crawl up the stairway. Is it possible to move it further away? I would also recommend a much larger rug in a darker color to ground the room, perhaps an 8 x 11 Oriental rug to give your living room some richness. The light furniture and glass tables give the room a very insubstantial quality. It's not done any more, and hasn't been for some time, to have all matching tables. I would have a wooden console instead of a glass one and end tables that have a different style and material than the coffee table.

i'd match rod height with the door, and fill in the space between rod and glass with either working or non working roman shades.

Hi again. First of all THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to post here and help me with the window treatment dilemna. This is the first time I’ve ever posted on Houzz and it’s been a great experience.

Guess I should explain the furniture situation. The room you see in the photo was staged. This is how it looked when we saw the house when it was for sale. We just bought it and now all that furniture has been removed. I’m very excited about decorating that living room. Couldn’t agree more about the need for more richness, and centering the seating area under the chandelier.

I’m going to post some photos of the empty room. I welcome any and all suggestions! Thanks again.

Hanging the curtains anywhere but just above the framing looks odd. . Rina's example is the only way in this situation. IF/WHEN the windows are too small, and the ceiling is low it often makes sense to give the illusion of a larger window by hanging drapes outside the window's dimensions. USUALLY in this instance drapes are closed/rarely opened.

while i agree with you in principle, arcy_, this situation has a strange elevational change with the small foyer being raised above the living room on a stark, blank wall. it makes the "lower" windows look very small, when they arent. if the door and windows were the same height, i'd agree with you completely. with rods at casing height, they'd appear to be 5' tall.
